It was senior night for the Los Gatos boys volleyball team, but Fletcher Anderson wasn't content to just share the spotlight with his six classmates on Thursday night.
Anderson stepped into the starring role with 15 kills to lead the Wildcats to a 25-20, 25-12, 25-16 victory over Mountain View on April 29. The win helped the Cats improve to 10-0 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and to 30-2 for the year.
It was the second league win of the week for the Cats, who had handled Wilcox 25-11, 25-18, 25-11 a couple of nights earlier.
Jesse Barron topped Gatos with eight kills on the night. Drew McDowell finished with seven, Brian Register six, Travis Register four, Dan Kent three and Matt Arnold one. McDowell and Kent each had four blocks.
Mike Robarts led the squad with three service aces in the win and Rob Couchee was the team leader with 28 assists.
The Wildcats were coming off of a championship in their own tournament. Los Gatos knocked off Valley Christian 15-25, 25-15, 15-11 in the title match of the third annual Los Gatos Varsity Invitational.
Gatos entered the tournament at Santa Clara University's Leavey Center ranked second behind Mt. Madonna, but the Cats breezed through pool play with wins over Mitty (25-12, 25-22), St Francis (25-23, 25-17) and Leland (25-11, 25-14).
The Cats entered the championship bracket ranked No. 1 and beat Homestead 25-18, 25-22 in the quarterfinals and Bellarmine 25-17, 22-25, 15-8 in the semifinals to earn the title shot at Valley.
Anderson was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after leading the Wildcats to the team championship. Teammate Keith Catanese was named to the all-tournament team along with Eric Plunkett and Bryan Anders of Valley Christian, Brandon Williams of Bellarmine and Colin Safranek of Mt. Madonna.
The Wildcats will close out the league season this week, heading to Saratoga on May 4 before hosting Santa Clara on May 6 in a couple of 7 p.m. matches. The Central Coast Section playoffs begin May 13.
The Los Gatos junior varsity squad also won twice last week to push its league record to 10-0. The young Cats are 20-0 for the year.
The Wildcats manhandled Mountain View 25-15, 25-17 and whipped Wilcox 25-12, 25-8 last week.
Pete Graham had six kills to lead the Cats to the win over the Chargers. Frank Fritsch, Kevin Shain and Steve Conry added kills in the win and Fritsch came through with a solo block.
Setter Eric Rowell led the club with 14 assists and had five service aces. Alex Scott added two aces and Chris Renfer had one.
