to speech
hall of fame

Los Gatos High School English teacher Sharon E. Smith was elected to the California High School Speech Association Hall of Fame during an award ceremony in April. Smith is the high school's speech and debate coach as well as president of the Coast Forensic League, an organization within the speech association.

She was nominated for the award by fellow coaches and said she was stunned and excited to learn she had received the award. The hall of fame was established in 1987 to honor teachers dedicated to academic excellence who understand the value of developing oral-communication skills in the leaders of the future.

Catch the final performances in Los Gatos High School's theater, the Prentiss Brown Auditorium, before it closes for renovations until early 2006. The 22nd annual pops concert will highlight many of Broadway's greatest hits of the past and present.

More than 70 performers from the choir, dance ensemble and Jazz Purr group will perform May 27 and 28, 8 p.m. each night. The event is open to the public and is appropriate for all ages.

Tickets are available in advance at a $2 discount if purchased before May 21. After May 21, tickets will be available at the box office, which opens one hour before the curtain, for $12 reserved and $10 general admission. Proceeds benefit the school's music program.
