In need of some relatively inexpensive power tools or perhaps a welding set? Just head over to Peter Gillcrist's home at 560 University Ave. and see what he has to offer. While there, browse his collection of children's clothes, toys and books. And don't forget to grab a cup of coffee.
Gillcrist is one of hundreds participating in the town's annual communitywide garage sale on May 15. The event is a partnership between the town, Monte Sereno and the Santa Clara County Recycling and Waste Reduction Program.
"It's a good time for us to clean house," says Gillcrist. "It's also a good time for people to meet and mingle with neighbors."
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., shoppers can stroll through residential neighborhoods and find just about anything for sale, from furniture to computers and even cars.
"The purpose is to provide a fun event for the entire community," says Lauren Mende Tacke, the town's recycling coordinator. "It's also a way to encourage people to reuse and recycle, to help avoid items going to the landfills. One person's garbage can be another person's treasure."
Tacke says there are approximately 300 households participating this year, not including the 20 private groups such as churches and nonprofit organizations.
"This is about 25 percent more people participating this year than last year," Tacke says.
To help make the search easier, a free shopper's guide containing addresses and information about items sold at each location will be available at several sites, including the Los Gatos Town Hall, the Monte Sereno City Hall, the Los Gatos Town Library, all 7-Eleven and Safeway stores in Los Gatos, Whole Foods Market, Los Gatos Roasting Company and the Neighborhood Center. Information is also available on the town's website at www.losgatosca.gov or by calling Tacke at 408.399.5796.
