Unseeded Wildcats upset Monarchs

As wins go, this was a big one. The Los Gatos boys tennis team entered the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs unseeded, and had to beat Leland in the first round to get a shot at one of the seeded teams.

The Cats did that, topping Leland 5-2 to earn a shot at Mitty. The Monarchs entered the playoffs seeded No. 2 with a 22-3 season record.

The Wildcats were obviously not impressed. They matched their first-round numbers with a 5-2 win over Mitty to eliminate the Monarchs from the tournament.

Los Gatos, 20-7 for the year, moves on to the CCS Division I semifinals against Palo Alto (18-5) on May 11, 3 p.m., at Paly. The winner will face the Aragon (19-4)Monta Vista (19-5) winner on May 13, 2:30 p.m., for the CCS championship. Monta Vista is the No. 1 seed in the tourney with Palo Alto #3 and Aragon #4.

The Cats are the only unseeded team in the semi's, and they made it with the upset win over Mitty on May 7.

Senior Matt Solomon and sophomore Pat Brogan each won in straight sets in singles play and Los Gatos swept the doubles matches to beat the Monarchs last week.

Soloman pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles and Brogan rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4.

Seniors Lee Gerston and Tin Tran teamed for a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Seniors Chase Huebner and James Lok combined for a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles and seniors Greg Thaler and Drew Froehlich won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

Junior Brian Brogan lost a tough 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision in three sets at No. 1 singles and senior Jon Teel lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.

Los Gatos, defending CCS Division I champs, opened the playoffs with the 5-2 win over Leland. The Brogan brothers were each winners in singles play to help the Cats to the team win.
