The final week of the season in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League won't decide too much for the Los Gatos baseball team.
The Wildcats enter the last two games of league play in third place in the division. They could finish as high as second with wins over Fremont and Palo Alto this week, but they can't catch division leader Wilcox. What's more, they can't finish any lower than third since fourth-place Los Altos goes into the week trailing the Cats by five games in the loss column.
So second or third, it really doesn't matter much—the Wildcats get to the Central Coast Section playoffs one way for the other.
But don't get the idea that these last two games don't mean much to Gatos coach Brad Sanfilippo and his Cats, especially that last game at Palo Alto.
Paly enters the final week of the season alone in second place with a 12-4 record and the Cats are close behind at 11-5—two of those five league losses coming against the Vikings. In all, Los Gatos has lost four times to Palo Alto this spring—twice in league play and two non-league games. Three of the losses have been by one run, the other by two runs.
"We have three one-run losses against [Palo Alto]," said Sanfilippo, whose club is 13-10 for the year. "We have some unfinished business with them."
First the Cats will do business with Fremont when Gatos hosts the Firebirds on May 11, 3:30 p.m., then it's on to Paly for a 3:30 p.m. game on May 13. Wins in each game would get the Cats a least a share of second place in the division and maybe a better spot in the CCS playoffs.
Wilcox has already clinched the league championship heading into the final week of league play. The Chargers are 15-1, three games up on second place Paly. Los Altos is a distant fourth at 8-11.
Los Gatos pounded Milpitas in its only league game last week. Kyle Jensen tossed a four-hitter to get the win and push his record to 6-4 for the year. Derek Thomas had three hits to drive in two runs to lead a nine-hit offensive attack for the Wildcats.
Milpitas scored a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead, but Jensen blanked the Trojans the rest of the way. Los Gatos unloaded for five runs in the third to take the lead for good, then picked up two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh for a little insurance.
Los Gatos added a non-league win on Saturday, holding on to beat Prospect 11-9. Thomas was the winning pitcher, pushing his record to 3-3.
Nick Perrone homered, doubled and drove in four runs to lead the Cats at the plate.
The Panthers scored two in the first to jump out to a quick lead, but Los Gatos answered with four in the bottom of the first. Prospect got one more in the second to cut the lead to 4-3, but Gatos took control with a six-run rally in the home half of the second to take a commanding 10-3 lead.
The Panthers were held scoreless in the third through sixth innings. Gatos picked up a run in the third, then went down without a run the rest of the way.
The Cats took a comfortable 11-3 lead into the seventh, but the Panthers made them feel a little uncomfortable with a six-run rally. But they came up two runs short and lost 11-9.
