Olsen, Dallas lead Cubs to tight Pony win over Astros
By Dick Sparrer
C.J. Olsen and Jackson Dallas each came up big on Saturday, and it was enough to lift the Cubs to a tight 8-7 win over the Astros in Los Gatos Pony League play.

Olsen ripped four hits, scored two runs and knocked in two more to help the Cubs take a slim 8-7 lead into the seventh inning, then Dallas shut the door on the Astros with three strikeouts.

Hank Hansen singled twice to drive in two runs and Robbie Comeau tripled a run home to help the Cubs clinch the win.

Nick Kalpin had three hits to lead the Astros at the plate. Christopher LaBouff singled and doubled and K.C. Silva and Ben Campbell added two hits apiece.

The Cubs took the early lead with a couple of runs in the second inning. Houston Hibberd and Michael Deloumi each singled, and Olsen singled to drive them both home.

Olsen singled and scored on a triple by Comeau to open the fifth. Comeau was singled home by Hansen, who scored when Jack Robson reached base, giving the Cubs a 5-0 lead.

But this time the Astros answered back with a run. Kalpin's single drove home Jeffrey Clark to cut the Cubs' lead to 5-1.

The Cubs made it 8-1 in the top of the sixth when Brett Litle scored, Olsen singled and scored and Matt Polizzi scored on a hit by Hansen.

That's when the Astros really came storming back. Justin Lewis singled and scored on a hit by Clark. Daniel Agrimonte scored on a double by LaBouff, and Clark and LaBouff raced home on a hit by Silva. Kalpin followed with a single, and both he and Silva came around to score to cut the lead to 8-7 heading into the seventh.

But that's when Dallas came on to shut the door, retiring the Astros one-two-three, all on strikes.

Earlier in the week, the Astros had beaten the Orioles 12-2, but lost 11-10 to the A's and 9-6 to the Red Sox.

Roger Smith ripped two hits, Kiko Alonso belted a triple and Travis Bonner and Sam Garber each cracked doubles to lead the A's to the 11-10 win over the Astros.

Kalpin singled and tripled and LaBouff, Campbell and Ryan Stillwell had two hits each in the loss.

A four-run second keyed the win for the A's. Bonner doubled and scored on a hit by Kevin Lord. Garber doubled home Lord, then scored on a single by Smith to highlight the rally. Smith had singled, stolen second and scored a run in the first.

Scotty Ryvola reached base, then stole second and third before scoring on single by Chad Mardesich in the fourth. Alonso followed with a run-scoring triple.

The A's added three runs in the fifth, then scored what proved the game-winner in the sixth when Hamilton Fairburn singled and scored on a hit by Blake Zamudio.

The Astros rallied for a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh when Kalpin tripled and David Haskell knocked him home. Campbell singled and stole second before Lewis singled to put runners on the corners. Stillwell's hit drove in Campbell to cut the lead to 11-10, but the Astros could not strike again.

The A's had beaten the Orioles 6-2 earlier in the week. Patrick Lewicki struck out 12 in six innings on the mound to get the win. He also singled and tripled for the A's. Bonner had two hits, Zamudio doubled and Josh Senna tripled in the win.

Greg Walters had two hits for the Orioles.

Silva had doubled twice and singled, Kalpin singled and doubled and Haskell had two hits for the Astros in their 12-2 win over the Orioles. Jake Scullion singled and doubled and Cole Meleyco doubled for the O's.

Nate Burke singled and tripled and Porter Holcomb tripled and drove in four runs to drive the Red Sox to a 9-6 win over the Astros. Haskell doubled in the game for the 'Stros.

The Giants won two of three games last week, beating the Red Sox 4-2 and the Yankees 11-6, but losing a tough 10-9 decision to the Orioles.

Andrew Gomez struck out 11 in six innings on the hill to lead the Giants to the 4-2 win over the Sox. Gomez helped his cause with a couple of hits and Geo Shannon and Coby Dombrowsky each doubled.

Burke tripled and Karl Winkelman doubled for the Sox.

The Giants took a quick lead with two runs in the first. Shannon doubled and, after Caleb Larson reached first, the two scored on a single by Gomez.

Kyle MacLean singled, stole second and ultimately scored on a sacrifice fly by Larson to put the Giants up 3-0 in the second.

The Sox cut the lead to 3-2 with single runs in the fourth and sixth. Paul Politi singled and scored on a Burke triple in the fourth, and Winkelman doubled and Brett Labombarda knocked him home in the sixth.

But Nate Aguiar reached in the bottom of the sixth, stole second and scored on a sac fly by Dombrowsky to add a little insurance for the Giants.

MacLean singled and tripled, Larson and Ryan McGee had two hits apiece and Shannon tripled to pace the Giants to an 11-6 win over the Yankees.

Mike Denevi doubled and singled twice to lead the Yanks. Jamie Eldredge singled and doubled and Steven Hight doubled.

McGee and Chris Shelton each singled to key a two-run second for the Giants.

The Giants scored a run in the third and Shannon doubled home MacLean and Joe Pierce in the fourth. MacLean ripped a two-run in the fifth and scored a run, and the Giants added three more in the sixth.

Kyle Johnson singled and scored on a double by Denevi in the first for the Yanks. Denevi scored on a single by Hight.

Eldredge doubled and scored on a hit by David Frazer in the second, and in the fifth Sam Panvini singled home two runs.

Blake Morrison threw three strong innings to lead the Orioles to a 10-9 win over the Giants. Morrison struck out seven in his stint. Meleyco had a triple among his four hits and Walters had two hits to lead the offense for the O's.

Shannon singled and doubled and Gomez, Aguiar, McGee and Kevin Messa each doubled in the game for the Giants.

It was a six-run rally in the fourth that sparked the win for the Orioles.
