They're first going in, and Los Gatos boys volleyball coach Matt Lyles hopes that his Wildcats will be first coming out as they open the Central Coast Section playoffs this week.
Los Gatos is seeded No. 1 in the tournament and will open the playoffs at home on May 13, 7 p.m., against the King's Academy. The Knights, 16-8 for the year, are the No. 16 seed in the 16-team tourney. The Thursday winner moves into the quarterfinals on May 15 at Santa Clara High against the Live Oak (23-3)Leland (21-12) first-round winner. The semifinals at May 18 at Santa Clara with the championship match on May 20, 7 p.m., on the same court.
The Wildcats enter the playoffs with a 32-2 record following a 12-0 finish in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Cats wrapped up a perfect league season last week with wins over Santa Clara (25-8, 25-14, 25-13) and Saratoga (25-17, 25-9, 25-17).
Fletcher Anderson and Keith Catanese hammered home eight kills apiece to lead Gatos to the easy win over the Bruins. Travis Register and Steve Conry supported with five kills each and Jesse Barron and Brian Register added two each.
Conry, T. Register, Pete Graham and Dan Kent led the effort on the back row with their passing and digging, and Anderson and Catanese drilled two service aces apiece. T. Register, Barron, Frank Fristch and Catanese all had solo blocks at the net.
Senior setter Rob Couchee came through with 30 assists to lead the Wildcats to the three-game win over Saratoga to open the week. He set up Anderson, Barron and Casey Pfiefer for 10 kills each. Mike Robards, Couchee, T. Register and Kent also had kills in the win. Kent added three blocks.
Anderson, Barron, Pfiefer and T. Register were top passers and diggers in the match, Anderson led the squad with five service aces and Kent and T. Register had one each.
The Los Gatos junior varsity squad finished league play 10-0 following a 25-10, 25-13 win over Saratoga. It marked the sixth straight undefeated league season for the Gatos JVs.
Conry led the Cats with seven kills and Fritsch, Graham, Kevin Shain, Blake Bening, Jake Haueter, Kris Haushalter, Dan Langholff and Eric Rowell also had kills.
Fritsch contributed the only solo block of the night, and Dan Norvelle and Chris Renfer played well in the back row.
The highlight of the night was serving, with Rowell delivering four aces and Fritsch, Graham, Renfer, Alex Scott and Shain adding one each. The match opened on an ace by Rowell and closed on an ace by Fritsch.
Los Gatos suffered its only loss of the junior varsity season in the Los Gatos JV Tournament played May 1. The young Wildcats, 25-1 for the year, lost a 31-29, 17-25, 15-13 thriller to Granite Bay of Folsom in the tourney semifinals. Granite Bay went on to win the tournament championship and Los Gatos finished third.
Gatos opened with three wins in pool play, beating Serra 25-9, 25-16, Head Royce of Oakland 25-10, 25-19 and San Lorenzo Valley 25-14, 25-19.
Los Gatos beat the Granite Bay freshman team 25-14, 25-7 in the quarterfinals before losing to the school's JV team in the semifinals.
Granite Bay, unbeaten over the last three years, had to go to the tiebreaker to beat the Cats in three games. Conry led the Wildcats with six kills and Rowell, Fritsch, Graham and Haushalter added kills. Norvelle and Renfer were passing leaders for the Cats.
