The Los Gatos Rowing Club's girls varsity lightweight 8 team won a berth in the national championships by finishing second at the regionals held recently at Lake Natoma in Sacramento.

The girls, who have been rowing together for the past three years, had to finish in the top two to qualify for nationals, and they did with their second-place finish in the 12-team field. Rowers from all of California and Arizona were represented in the event.

Members of the team, coached by Nathan Cravens, included Dora Chua of Saratoga High School, Katie Erickson and Emily Harper of Los Gatos High, Michelle Lewuerz and Alyssa Kehriotas of Mitty and Claire O'Conner, Sam Burns, Emily Muscatell, Mary Morici and Alex Werner of Presentation.

The girls varsity lightweight 8 was the only boat from the Los Gatos Rowing Club to qualify for nationals.

Watts wins

Graham Watts, a 2003 graduate of Los Gatos High School, was a member of the UC Berkeley freshman boat that won a title at the Pac 10 crew championships held May 16 at Lake Natoma in Sacramento.

The Cal team finished in 6:01.8, well ahead of Washington State's second-place effort of 6:10.9.

Watts and his Golden Bear teammates were unbeaten for the season and will now compete in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national finals in Camden, N.J.
