Monte Sereno's fifth annual picnic at Oak Meadow Park
By My Ngo
June 21 marks the first day of summer, but the city of Monte Sereno isn't waiting until then to celebrate the start of a new season.

The city invites all Monte Sereno residents to an afternoon of food and entertainment at its fifth annual picnic and barbecue on June 5 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at Oak Meadow Park.

"About 100 people came out last year," says Councilman David Baxter. "We're anticipating a pretty good turnout this year. It's a nice opportunity for people to get together and meet their neighbors in a casual setting."

It's also an opportunity to check out some local talent. For the first time, there will be live music from guitarist Jerry Snyder, who has written more than 100 publications on guitar techniques in various musical genres and has performed at venues including those of the American Musical Theater and the San Jose Symphony. Other performers include the Raging Weasels, a seven-member band comprised of rock, jazz, reggae, blues and classical artists, and the critically acclaimed Pierce Pettis. Pettis will be singing tunes from his third album, State of Grace, featuring Grammy winners Alison Brown, Gordon Kennedy and Claire Lynch.

There will be activities to keep children entertained as well, including rides on the Billy Jones Wildcat Train and the carousel.

The event is free and will take place in picnic areas 1 and 2. The park is located at 233 Blossom Hill Road. For more information, call the city office at 408.354.7635.
