Town staff and Mayor Steve Glickman met with Department of Motor Vehicles representatives June 8 to discuss softening the blow of the Los Gatos office's upcoming closure.
The DMV office at 600 N. Santa Cruz Ave. will close at the end of the business day June 17 for replacement of the 32-year-old building's ceiling, interior lights, flooring, phone and computer cables, and ventilation, heating and air-conditioning system. Public restrooms will be upgraded, the interior and exterior will be repainted and the interior will be redesigned in an effort to improve customer flow and efficiency.
The renovated office is scheduled to reopen Oct. 25.
Glickman called the meeting because he wanted to find out if there were any options for keeping any of the office's operations open, even if just on a part-time basis.
Paul Crompton, DMV field operations office manager, said he would be open to any discussion of mitigating the office's closure. He said the office did need to be closed for the entire four months, however, due to the extensive nature of the renovations and the possibility that asbestos could be discovered.
Glickman, Town Manager Debra Figone, Community Development Director Bud Lortz and Parks and Public Works Director John Curtis asked Crompton and other DMV personnel about the feasibility of keeping some department functions in town.
Crompton said DMV staff could operate at a different location, but would only be able to provide limited services.
"It's not only just a body in a desk, it's telecommunications and support structures," he said.
Bryan Johnson, DMV associate construction analyst, said the cost of providing telecommunications and other technological infrastructure to a portable or other facility for four months would not be very cost-effective. But some functions—such as answering basic questions, handing out forms and accepting paperwork to be processed at another location—could be done from a nonconnected site in Los Gatos.
Figone said she would try to find out if any such site was available, but said she worried that providing limited operations could be more troublesome than simply closing the office.
"What I'm concerned about is people getting confused," she said. "Would our good intentions cause people to get mad?"
Glickman suggested that, should a plan be worked out, the town and department review its effectiveness after a few weeks.
Offices in Santa Clara, San Jose, Capitola, Redwood City, Fremont and Capitola will remain open during the Los Gatos closure. In addition, some driving tests will be administered at a nonpublic office in Mountain View.
