By day he's just an ordinary boy, but when Tim Garvey steps to the rubber to pitch for the Red Sox in the Los Gatos Little League he becomes a giant among his peers.
At least he did on June 12 when Garvey sparked his team to a first-round win in the major division World Series. Garvey roped two triples and threw three shutout innings, striking out five, to lead the Red Sox to an 8-0 victory over the Diamondbacks.
David Picone supported with two singles and scored two of the Red Sox eight runs. Joey Comeau ripped two singles and scored a run and Keith Brassil, Michael Whitney, Ran Barker each scored a run in the win.
Brendan Crane also threw three shutout innings for the Red Sox with six batters fanned. Crane and Garvey combined for an impressive two-hitter on the day.
For the D'backs, only Robbie Dunne stood out, striking out eight batters in six innings pitched, but it wasn't enough.
Later that day, the Tigers met the Reds on the same field and the walked away with a
7-1 victory.
The Reds made an attempt, but fell short. Nathan Fumia had two base knocks for the Reds and scored their only run. Jason Shepardson also ripped two singles.
The Tigers had a great day at the plate with John Williams leading his team. Williams crushed a three-run homer and a two-run jack to right center, giving him five RBIs on the day. Williams also pitched three shutout innings with four outs by way of strikes.
Mike Mitchell helped out with a double, two singles and an RBI. T. Patton blasted a single and a double and scored a run, with Sutton Roley and M. Goldberg both ripping singles and scoring runs.
The Red Sox and Tigers were to face each other on June 14, and the D'backs were to challenge the Reds the same day. The D'backs-Reds winner will face the loser of the Red Sox-Tigers game on June 16, and that winner will meet the winner of the Red Sox-Tigers game in the World Series final on June 18. If a second game of the final round is necessary, it will be played on June 20 at 1 p.m.
