It took three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the Astros to nail a 12-11 win over the Orioles, and it was a very important win indeed.
With the win, the Astros clinched the regular season title in the Los Gatos Pony League. The Astros were able to finish in first place despite an 8-3 loss to the second-place Giants later in the week.
Nick Kalpin tripled, double and singled twice to lead the Astros to the win over the O's. Justin Lewis supported with a pair of hits.
The Orioles had taken a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Astros went up 5-2 in the third. A double by Chris LaBouff, a two-run double by Kalpin, a two-run single by Lewis and a run-scoring hit by Mac Jordan keyed the rally. LaBouff, K.C. Silva, Kalpin, David Haskell and Lewis all scored runs in the inning.
Singles by Brian Rose and Silva and a triple by Kalpin sparked a four-run fifth, and the Astros scored three more in the seventh to win it.
The Orioles had taken an 11-9 lead in the top of the seventh. Colin Carney doubled home Cole Meleyco, then scored on a single by Jakob Jorgenson. The O's would score three more runs in the frame to take the lead, only to lose it in the bottom of the frame.
Later in the week, Silva singled and doubled and Ben Campbell had two hits, but the Astros lost 8-3 to the Giants.
Kevin Messa threw six strong innings to get the win for the Giants, striking out nine along the way.
Chris Shelton ripped three hits, Messa and Andrew Gomez added two apiece and Caleb Larson doubled.
The Giants scored a pair of runs in the second. Ryan McGee singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Messa. Messa stole second and third and scored on a single by Aguair.
The Astros got one back in the third when Silva singled and scored on a hit by Campbell.
But the Giants blew the game open with six runs in the fifth. Singles by Geo Shannon, Gomez, Messa, Shelton and Coby Dombrowsky and a double by Larson were key hits in the rally. Ryan McGee and Aguair were also part of the big inning.
Singles by Campbell, Jeffrey Clark and Ryan Stillwell helped the Astros add two runs in the sixth, but it was too little, too late.
The Giants also rolled to a 5-2 win over the Red Sox. McGee slapped two hits and Dombrowsky tripled to lead the offense for the winners.
Michael Shawhan singled and doubled and Paul Politi and Nate Burke each doubled in the game for the Sox.
The Giants scored three times in the top of the first to take an early lead, then later put the game away with two runs in the third. Larson reached base and McGee followed with a single. Brian Comstock knocked them both home to clinch the win.
The Sox had scored in the first when Karl Winkleman singled and scored on a double by Burke. Doubles by Shawhan and Politi in the sixth accounted for their only other run of the game.
The Sox came back to beat the A's 9-7. Chris Walker doubled and singled twice in the win. Politi doubled twice and Winkleman and Brett Labombarda each had a couple of hits.
Blake Zamudio led the A's with a triple and two singles. Kiko Alonso singled and tripled and Patrick Lewicki tripled.
The clubs were locked in a 7-7 heading to the seventh inning when the Sox scored twice to claim the win.
Winkleman singled and, after Kevin Connelly reached base, Walker blasted a two-run double to help to team to the victory.
A double by Politi and singles by Winkleman and Walker gave the Red Sox two runs in the first, and they came back with another one in the third when Politi doubled again and scored on a sacrifice fly by Connelly.
The Cubs clinched third place in the regular season with a 7-5 win over the Yankees. Robbie Comeau belted a couple of hits and Hank Hansen doubled in the win. Jackson Dallas struck out seven in three innings of mound work.
Garrett Blackwell singled and doubled and Matt Kirwin had two hits for the Yanks.
The Cubs dropped a 15-11 nod to the A's in their final regular season game. Zamudio tripled, doubled and singled twice to lead the A's to the win. Sam Martin singled and doubled and Scott Ryvola had two hits.
Comeau had two singles for the Cubs. Houston Hibberd tripled and Dallas belted a double. Matt Polizzi, Michael Deloumi and Max Montanari also contributed for the Cubs.
The Orioles turned back the Yankees
8-1. John Raynaud ripped a three-run homer, Meleyco singled and doubled and Blake Morrison had two hits. Morrison also struck out seven in four innings on the hill.
