Glickman undergoes emergency surgery for gallbladder removal
By Grant Shellen
After experiencing several bouts of what he thought was stomach flu, Los Gatos Mayor Steve Glickman underwent surgery June 14 to remove his gallbladder.

Glickman was experiencing a great deal of pain June 12 and admitted himself to the emergency room at Good Samaritan Hospital late that night. "I described the symptoms to the surgeon and he said, 'That's your gallbladder. It's going to come out,' " Glickman said.

The gallbladder stores bile produced in the liver and regulates its flow to the stomach, but can be removed if necessary.

An ultrasound and a CAT scan confirmed the doctor's analysis. Surgeons originally planned to remove the organ on June 13, but power problems had the hospital using an emergency generator. Since his condition improved a bit, surgeons waited until the next day to perform the operation.

Glickman said he is expected to fully recover in about four to six weeks but that he is feeling fine.

"I'm very, very fortunate that, thanks to the excellent surgeon, I'm not in any pain at all," he said.

The mayor plans to do work for his software consulting company from home for the next few weeks, and as of press time planned to attend the June 21 council meeting. He said that he expected to be able to fulfill his mayoral duties without much trouble and that anything he could not do would be "ably handled" by Vice Mayor Mike Wasserman.
