It's a good take for Joey Comeau of the Red Sox as he looks at a ball in a Los Gatos Little League playoff game against the Tigers. The Sox beat the Tigers 6-5 in extra innings in this game, then won 7-6 over the Tigers two days later to take the league title.
Sox pull out a miracle win over Tigers

They had already been beaten once, and they needed a miracle to take home the championship. So the question is, do you believe in miracles?

No, this wasn't the Olympic hockey team, it was the Red Sox of Los Gatos Little League major division—and, yes, they do believe in miracles.

After losing to the Tigers early in the double elimination playoff tournament, the Red Sox needed to defeat the Tigers in two consecutive games to become league champions, and they did just that.

The last game was played on June 20 when the Red Sox downed the Tigers 7-6 after trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth and final inning.

With the bases loaded and one out, Tim Garvey hit a ground ball to the second baseman and was able to beat the attempted double play throw, allowing Max Genetti and Brendan Perrelli to score the tying and winning runs.

The Sox had scored in the bottom of the fourth when Michael Whitney led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. He advanced on a failed fielder's choice off the bat of David Picone and scored on a base knock by Garvey.

The majority of the runs for the Sox came in the bottom of the first. Garvey, Brendan Crane, Keith Brassil and Ross Hastings all scored in the first for the Sox to give them the early lead.

The Tigers were not without their heroes, though. Michael Mitchell had four hits on the day, but could not bring his team a championship. Nick Lamson also had a pair of hits in the loss.

This was not the first time the Red Sox defeated the Tigers. The Sox defeated the Tigers on June 18 6-5 in seven innings to force a second game where they would eventually take the championship.

The Sox scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to win. Garvey doubled to open the inning and Crane singled him in for the game-winning run.

The Sox put together two runs in the last of the fifth on an error and two hits, with Garvey and Hastings both crossing the plate for the Red Sox.

The bottom of the third marked another pair of runs for the Sox. Picone opened the inning with a walk and once again Garvey came up with a hit to advance him. Crane singled, loading the bases, and Brassil reached on a fielder's choice allowing Picone to score. Garvey scored a moment later on a wild pitch.

Hastings singled in the second, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a base knock by Perrelli.

John Williams was the first to cross the plate for the Tigers in the first inning. Williams reached on a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a hit by Matt Calhoun and scored on a passed ball.

The Tigers struck again with a run in the fourth when Michael Skubis crossed the plate with the help of a hit off the bat of Tom Patton. The Tigers put up three more runs in the fifth, but it was not enough to defeat the Red Sox.

Earlier in the week, the Diamondbacks fell to the Red Sox 5-3. Charlie Zweng scored two runs for the Sox and Crane struck out six batters in only three innings.

Robbie Dunne pitched a complete game with six outs by way of strikes and Darrin Dufort had a pair of base hits in the loss.

The D'backs topped the Reds 7-2. Chase Svendsen threw a complete game for the D'backs, striking out seven. Jake Raynaud scored three runs and Pat Shultz accounted for two of the runs. Harrison Chadwick also helped out by turning two double plays in the game.

The Tigers and Red Sox also met for the first time in the post season on June 14. John Williams blasted a home run for the Tigers, had two RBIs and threw three shutout innings with five strikeouts to help aid the Tigers to their 4-1 victory. Skubis also scored twice for the Tigers in the win. Williams had belted two homers in a 7-1 win over the Reds earlier in the tourney.

Cambrian wins TOC

Perfection is unattainable, right? Well, it seems the Cambrian Park Giants of the Cambrian Park Little League didn't know that when they finished their spectacular 2004 run with a clean sweep at the District 12 Tournament of Champions to end an undefeated baseball season.

The Giants opened the TOC with a 14-3 win over the Los Gatos Royals, then blanked Lincoln Glen 7-0 and beat the Quito Cardinals 5-1. Cambrian met Union in the championship game and rolled to a 14-1 win.

The members of the championship Cambrian Park Giants included Jason Berticevich, Matt Urakami, Stephen Meade, Ryan Nunes, Kevin Chase, Ryan Petulla, Dylan Costello-Marinoni, Dylan Katernick-Perez, Alex Johnson, David Gerhardt and Brad Deutschman.

The Union Cardinals made it to the final round of the TOC by beating Saratoga in the first round and advancing straight to the semifinals where they topped Branham before meeting Cambrian Park in the final round of the tournament.

The other teams to win first round games included Lincoln Glen over Willow Glen, Quito over Almaden South 7-0 and the Los Gatos Cubs 2-1 over Almaden North. Tyler Olivet was the winning pitcher and scored the winning run for the Cubs in the seven-inning win over Almaden. But the Cubs lost 15-10 to Branham a game later.

With the TOC done, now District 12 all-star tournaments are set to begin.

The 910 age group all-star tournament begins on July 2 at Baggerly and Balzer fields in Los Gatos with the Los Gatos American all-star team facing Saratoga and Willow Glen squaring off against Lincoln Glen at 5:30 p.m.

Saratoga will face Branham, Lincoln Glen will challenge Almaden North, Los Gatos American will get its start against Cambrian Park, Willow Glen will be pitted against Quito, Union will attempt to topple American and Almaden South will try its luck against Los Gatos National on July 3.

American will face Branham and Almaden North will take on Los Gatos National on July 5 at 5:30 p.m. The next set of games will be held on July 6 at 5:30 p.m. with Cambrian up against Union and Quito attempting to defeat Almaden South.

The district will also hold its major division all-star tournament at the same time on the Lincoln Glen Little League Fields. The tournament begins on July 2 at 5:30 p.m. with Willow Glen and Quito squaring off and Branham and Lincoln Glen facing each other in the first games of the tournament.

There will be six games on two fields on July 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Quito will start against Los Gatos American, Lincoln Glen will have its shot against Saratoga and Willow Glen will face Almaden North later in the day. Branham and Cambrian will challenge each other before American steps up against Union, and Los Gatos National has its attempt at Almaden South.

On July 5, Union will face Los Gatos American and Saratoga meets Almaden South. Almaden North will square off against American while Cambrian attempts to topple the Los Gatos National team.

Four more days of baseball will follow in each tournament before the top two teams in each pool play meet to see who plays for the district championships.
