The hitters were on fire when the Giants faced the Cubs in a Los Gatos Pony Baseball playoff game on June 13. The two teams combined for 23 runs on the night, but only one team could walk away with the win.
The Giants struck first in their 12-11 victory over the Cubs when Kevin Messa ripped a single to drive in Andrew Gomez in the bottom of the first. Messa advanced to third on a hit by Ryan McGee and stole home for the second run of the first inning. McGee also crossed the plate that inning, giving the Giants and early three run lead.
In the last of the second, Brian Comstock roped a single, stole second and scored on a hit by Geo Shannon, but that was not the end of the inning. The Giants would have Shannon, Caleb Larson, Gomez, Messa and McGee all cross home plate before the Cubs could get the three outs.
In the bottom of the third, Shannon singled and scored on a three-bagger by Gomez.
The fourth inning would mark the last inning the Giants had runners cross the plate. Chris Shelton belted a single, stole second and was advanced to third on a single by Coby Dombrowsky. Dombrowsky stole second and both Shelton and Dombrowsky scored later that inning to give the Giants their 12 runs. Shannon, Dombrowsky and McGee had two hits each, Shelton roped three base knocks on the day and Gomez came up big with a double and a triple.
The Cubs were not without their say in this game, however. They fought hard and put up an impressive seven runs in the top of the third inning with Houston Hibberd, Brett Litle, C.J. Olsen, Robbie Comeau, Jackson Dallas, Matt Polizzi and Jack Robson all scoring in the inning.
They put up three more in the fifth to keep the game close with Comeau, Dallas and Robson coming home for the Cubbies. Robson scored again in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to bring down the Giants and the Cubs fell short by one run.
Olsen had three singles for his squad, while Dallas roped a pair of hits and Comeau crushed a single and a triple. Robson had a big bat with a double and a triple, but it was not enough to topple the Giants.
In other action, the Orioles defeated the A's 3-1 on June 13 with only Patrick Lewicki standing out for the Athletics. Lewicki struck out 13 batters in his complete game effort and scored the A's only run, but his efforts were not enough.
Blake Morrison was atop the mound for the Orioles, throwing like a professional with 13 outs by way of strikes in just five innings and giving up no hits.
This loss was the second for the A's, which eliminated them from the tournament.
The Astros challenged the Red Sox on June 12 and emerged victorious 7-4. Paul Politi, Karl Winkleman, Kevin Connelly and Nate Burke were the only runners to score for the Red Sox.
Chris LaBouff crushed a double for the Astros to aid them in their victory along with K.C. Silva and Ben Stillwell, who also doubled in the win.
After a grueling eight-inning game, the Cubs were finally able to put down the Yankees 7-6 on June 12. Stephen Hight of the Yanks was a triple away from the cycle with a single, a double and a home run in the loss. Hight also stood on top of the mound for three innings and was able to strike out seven in his time there.
Olsen of the Cubs was on fire with three base hits and a double, while teammate Dallas roped a single and two doubles to help their team to the win.
The Giants and A's faced each other on June 9 with the Giants walking away with the win 6-2.
Roger Smith of the A's roped two singles on the day with Jermal Ladd and Smith scoring the only runs for the A's.
The Giants' McGee and Gomez each belted two hits.
June 7 marked the first game of the tournament when the Red Sox and Orioles faced each other and the Sox walked away victorious 9-3.
Morrison of the O's had two base hits and struck out 11 batters in just five innings for a decent night on the mound. Cole Meleyco crushed two singles, with Cody Kollman smashing a triple and Michael Gardner roping a double.
Politi and Connelly tripled for the Sox while Brett Labombarda doubled and Porter Holcomb had two singles.
