Kalpin leads Astros to win over Sox, and Pony crown

Nick Kalpin wielded a big bat, and because of it the Astros were able to defeat the Red Sox 11-7 to take home the championship in the Los Gatos Pony Baseball season-ending tournament.

The Astros had won the regular season championship and were able to back that up by finishing first in the league tourney.

Kalpin ripped a single, a double and a three-run homer to drive in four runs in the victory. David Haskell also swung a heavy bat, ripping a single and a double. K.C. Silva roped a double and Ben Campbell helped out with two singles, leading the Astros to the title-clinching win.

Only Brett LaBombarda and Kevin Connelly stood out for the Red Sox. LaBombarda roped two base hits and Connelly had three RBIs.

The Red Sox had met the Giants the day before and walked away with a 15-8 win that advanced them to the final round. Geo Shannon had a pair of base hits for the Giants and teammate Ryan McGee ripped three singles in the loss.

A multitude of players were hitting the ball well for the Red Sox that day. Nate Burke clubbed a single and a triple, Paul Politi smashed a double, Karl Winkleman crushed a double and a triple, Connelly, Michael Shawhan and Chris Walker each had two singles and LaBombarda ripped a single and a triple to eliminate the Giants from the tournament.

The Astros faced the Giants on June 17 and put them down 6-1. LaBouff, Silva and Kalpin blasted two singles each in the Astros win with Kalpin pitching a complete game.

Cody Dombrowsky made a valiant effort, smashing a triple for the Giants, but it was not enough to take down the Astros.

On June 16, the Red Sox defeated the Cubs 16-6. The bats of the Red Sox were alive that day with eight players having multiple hits. Burke belted two singles, Shawhan, Politi and LaBombarda each crushed a single and a double, Winkleman smashed three singles and roped a triple, Connelly and Chris Walker each had two base knocks and Chris Bitter belted three singles and a double to eliminate the Cubs.

Jackson Dallas of the Cubbies was the only player on his team to truly stand out with two base knocks and a powerful jack.

The Cubbies took one from the Orioles 5-4 on June 15. Robbie Comeau blasted two home runs, Dallas ripped a triple and Sean Harrington threw three shut out innings as the Cubs eliminated the Orioles.

The Orioles' Cody Kollman ripped a single and a double, but could not help the Orioles avoid elimination.

The Red Sox eliminated the Yankees from the tournament, winning 9-8 on June 14. Burke and Bitter doubled for the Red Sox. Winkleman roped a single and a double and Walker had a great day at the plate with a single, a double and a big home run.

Jarrod Lefton doubled and Mike Denevi belted two singles for the Yanks.
