Talk about longshots—if Las Vegas was setting odds on the Vultures' chances of winning the 12 and under championship in the Los GatosSaratoga Girls Softball Association, the numbers would have been off the charts.
As it turns out, though, it seems that everyone knew that expect the Vultures.
The girls who had finished in last place in the regular season with a 2-13 record won three of four games in the season-ending league tournament to claim the crown—and they did it after losing their tourney opener and coming back to win three straight games.
The Vultures lost 12-11 to the Eagles in the tournament opener, but battled back to edge the Ravens 4-3, to get a little revenge with an 8-4 win over the Eagles and then top the Falcons 5-3 in the finals.
Emma Cherniss and Rebecca Staab combined to toss a one-hitter in the tourney title game. Cherniss tossed the first three innings, Staab flipped to the next two and Cherniss returned to the circle to pitch the sixth.
Falcons hurler Kelsey Gummow struck out eight in five innings of work.
Allison Heymann bunted for three hits in the win for the Vultures, including a bunt single that started the game-winning rally in the sixth inning.
Diana Beck bunted for a hit and Heymann eventually worked her way around to score the tying run. Cathryn Paolini ripped a line drive single to center to plate Beck with the game winner.
The Eagles struck the Vultures with a 12-11 loss in the first round of the tourney. Lauren Christensen, Laura Slabon and Katie Abelson scored three runs each in the win.
Bunt singles by Heymann and Beck, a double by Madeline Schmitt, a single by Katie Holms and a triple to right by Kit Strong helped the Vultures rally for five runs in the first.
But singles by Christensen, Abelson, and Madeline Rothenberg, combined with six walks, helped the Eagles tie it with five in the second.
Christensen belted a two-out double in the fifth and scored on a single by Slabon. Abelson's single knocked in Slabon with what would prove the game-winning run.
The Vultures came flying back, though, with a 4-3 win over the Ravens. Cherniss and Staab teamed to toss a five-hitter for the victory. Heymann, Beck, Staab and Julia Thomas had key hits in the win.
Sara Van Belleghem struck out 10 in four innings for the Ravens.
Slabon struck out 10, but the Vultures were able to get a little revenge over the Eagles with an 8-4 triumph. The win pushed the Vultures into the title game.
Cherniss and Staab combined for a four-hitter, Slabon getting two of them.
Heymann, who was perfect 9 for 9—all of them bunt singles—and scored seven runs in the tourney, scored the winning run for the Vultures. Beck scored seven runs and was 8 for 10 in the tourney, including a double in the win over the Eagles.
Regular season standings: Hawks 14-1, Eagles 8-7, Ravens 8-7, Falcons 7-8, Condors 6-9, Vultures 2-13.
