Los Gatos Art FestPlein Air art competition 'needs you!'
By Dick Sparrer
The military recruitment posters once said, "Uncle Sam Needs You!" Now a similar call is being sent out by the Los Gatos Art Association.

"Los Gatos Needs You!" is the call going out to artists everywhere to enter the field for the first ever Los Gatos Art FestPlein Air competition scheduled for Sept. 30Oct. 2.

Plein air is the centuries-old tradition of painting outdoors, a movement started by Impressionist artists at the turn of the 19th century, including Monet, Degas and Vangogh.

The three-day juried competition will feature $5,000 in monetary awards. Jurors include Richard McDaniel, George Rivera and Bob Gerbracht. Artists must submit entry forms by July 15 for the competition.

The Los Gatos Art Fest will begin with a reception for the artists on Sept. 30 at the Art Museum of Los Gatos. Artists will be required to start and complete their paintings on Oct. 1 with a reception and awards ceremony on Oct. 2 at Testarossa Vineyards.

The competition is co-sponsored by the Los Gatos Art Association and the Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club. Committee members include Elke Groves, Valerie Hopkins, Sandy Decker, Teri Hope, Marilyn Dorsa, Tanya Carpenter, Sue Lucas and Nicki Huber.
