Mariachi Festival
Mexico comes alive for five days of music and dance
By Estelle Hayes
¡Ay, Jalisco no te Rajes!, Mervyn's 13th annual San Jose International Mariachi Festival, strolls into town July 14 through 18. Presented by the Mexican Heritage Plaza, the festival celebrates the best of Mexico's mariachi and folkloric music in five event-filled days.

With a particular emphasis on the spirited music of the state of Jalisco--birthplace of the mariachi genre--activities include musical workshops, large stage performances, and even a few free concerts. All events take place at the Mexican Heritage Plaza located at 1700 Alum Rock Ave. in San Jose.

Starting on July 14, music lovers may join more than 300 students from all over the Southwest in attending master classes on the mariachi form and folkloric dance. The cost of registration for the five days of seminars is $85.

The concerts kick off on July 15 with a family concert featuring recording sensation Manuel Romero and the championship youth band Mariachi San José. The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $15.

The music heats up on July 16 with a gala evening of music from Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles featuring soloist Melinda. The night will include a serenade by strolling mariachis. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $35.

There is a more formal setting, including theater seating, for the evening of July 17 when Mariachi de America de don Jesus Rodriguez de Hijar takes the stage. Based in Mexico City, the orchestra is considered by many to be the best mariachi ensemble in the world. The evening's program also features movie and ranchera recording star Yolanda del Rio, accompanied by her own mariachi group. The show starts at 8 p.m., with tickets priced at $50.

On the morning of July 18, a mariachi-style rendition of the Catholic Mass features Mariachi Tapatio. There is no cost to attend.

The festival ends later that evening with a free musical extravaganza offering three stages of mariachi music and folkloric entertainment.
