Palo Alto's TheatreWorks continues its 35th season with the Northern California premiere of Chay Yew's gripping drama, Red. Set against the political and social upheaval of China's Cultural Revolution, Red weaves a compelling story of artistic expression, personal awakening and human tragedy that manages to be both intimate and grand at the same time.
Starring Broadway regular Francis Jue, the drama is played out in an abandoned Beijing opera house, where the lives of a once-revered Chinese opera star, played by Jue, his young Maoist apprentice and a celebrated Chinese-American novelist collide with poignant and painful consequences. As the personal machinations absorb us, we also come to see in full relief the sweeping backdrop and tumultuous times that remain a scar on China's ideological landscape.
Robert Kelly, founding artistic director of TheatreWorks, directs the play. The cast is rounded out by Allison Si, as novelist Sonja Wong Pickford, Grace Hsu as the young revolutionary, Ling, Rinabeth Apostol and Lawrence-Michael C. Arias. The choreographer is Jamie H.J. Guan.
TheatreWorks' Northern California premiere of "Red" runs July 17 to Aug. 8 at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto. Tickets are $20$50. Call 650.903.6000 or go to www.theatreworks.org for more information.
