Artist, architect join forces for show at LG Art Museum
By Lisa Toth
Celebrating 10 years of collaboration, Glen Rogers of Oakland and Bill Gould of San Jose, members of an artist/architect team, will be showcasing their work at the Art Museum of Los Gatos, 4 Tait Ave., from Aug. 5 through Oct. 2.

The team has created more than 25 public artwork displays in schools and communities. Photographs, renderings, schematics and models will highlight their process and completed installations. A reception will be held on Aug. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the museum to showcase their work.

Rogers and Gould, formerly of Los Gatos, have a philosophy of creating artwork integral to the environment, enhancing their architectures with playful and engaging solutions. Their Myths and Fairytales art fence for Luther Burbank Elementary School in San Jose is an example of work that serves both the community and the school. The team also incorporates creative collaboration with students, teachers and the community—the ultimate users of the site.

They design projects that incorporate the work of children and the community, such as drawings, cast-concrete, painted tiles and mosaics. One of their most noted projects, Spirit Gate in San Jose, is a ceremonial gateway that provides a dramatic entrance to the Hester Elementary School site in San Jose. The students worked on the mosaics embedded in the stucco columns and picked the power words cut out of the gateway.

The exhibition will highlight their work, along with art they have located in the Campbell Union School District, Whisman School District in Mountain View, San Jose Unified School District and the Los GatosSaratoga Joint Union High School District, as well as independent projects. The exhibition, which will be accompanied by a catalogue, will provide insight into their process from conception to fabrication.

Some of their featured pieces in the community include a woven fence installed in 2000 for the Nova continuation program in the local high school district. The artist/architect team worked with Nova teenagers to create designs inspired by ancient and modern symbols. In 2001, the artists completed a lyrical, curvilinear fence called Interconnections installed at Los Gatos High School near the library.
