They came, they saw, they ... didn't quite conquer. The Los Gatos Pony League all-star team lost last week 9-0 to Morgan Hill in the 14-year-old sectional tournament.
Los Gatos had opened the tourney with a pair of victories, the first a 5-1 win over the Morgan Hill B team on July 17. Lost Gatos struck early, with Nick Kalpin doubling and eventually scoring in the first inning. Still more runs came in the second when Kevin Messa smashed a two-run homer, scoring Paul Politi ahead of him. Andrew Gomez came home in the third on a neat sacrifice bunt by Politi, and the final run scored in the sixth when Patrick Lewicki doubled and scored on a single by C.J. Olsen.
Lewicki had brought his best stuff that day, standing atop the mound for five innings and striking out nine batters while giving up no runs.
The second victory for the Los Gatos club came the very next day on against Campbell B. Los Gatos went home with a 13-4 win under its belt.
The local stars' bats were certainly awake that day, with five extra base hits and three players with multiple hits. Kalpin stroked a triple and a base knock on the day, while K.C. Silva knocked three hits.
Kalpin started it all in the top of the first with a single. Kalpin was in a hurry, though, so he stole second and Silva singled to drive him in.
Silva was able to advance to third on a ground out by Andy Gomez and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Connelly.
Greg Walters, drove in Messa in the top of the third for run No. 3 and then Blake Morrison helped himself on the hill with a brilliant defensive play, flicking the ball from his glove to the first baseman for the second out of the fourth to quell a possible Campbell rally.
In the fifth, Silva singled and was followed by Gomez, who singled to send Silva to third. Silva was able to score on an attempted pick-off that sent the ball sailing down the right field line.
The sixth brought yet another run with Politi doubling and Messa dropping and nice sac bunt to move Politi to third. Walters singled to score Politi. Olsen singled to put runners at first and second, then after a double steal, the runners scored on a triple by Kalpin.
Then came the top of the seventh and a new pitcher. Lewicki and Robbie Comeau teed off and hit back to back dingers for Los Gatos. Jackson Dallas knocked a hit and Messa did the same. Walters drew a walk to load the bases and Olsen singled in a run, then Garrett Blackwell doubled, clearing the bases and scoring the final runs for Los Gatos.
Rounding out the 14-year-old Pony all-star team are Caleb Larson and Cole Meleyco.
This team was set to play on July 23 and pending the game possibly July 24 if they win.
The 13-year-old Los Gatos all-star team included Nate Aguair, Chris Bitter, Nate Burke, Travis Bonner, Colin Carney, Hank Hansen, Sean Harrington, Houston Hibberd, Stephen Hight, Kyle Johnson, Chris LaBouff, Ryan McGee, Kevin Murphy, Jake Scullion and Geo Shannon.
