It was the bottom of the sixth, and Los Gatos National 10-year-old Little League all-star team was all but beaten. The young 'stars were trailing by a run with just one at-bat remaining.
So did they give up? No way.
Los Gatos rallied for the tying run and, after allowing one in the top of the seventh, scored two in the bottom of the extra inning to take a 7-6 decision from Lincoln Glen in the District 12 10-year-old all-star tournament.
The drama actually began in the fifth inning, with Los Gatos trailing 5-1. Joey Comeau came up with a huge two-run double to bring some life back to the dugout. Gatos scored one more run before going back out into the field down just 5-4.
Jeff Larsen mashed a triple in the sixth that scored a run to tie it and take the game into extra innings.
Lincoln Glen added another run in the top of the seventh, but Los Gatos would not go away. Brian Rose hit a two out ground rule double to drive in the tying run and Jake Raynaud singled to score Rose and seal the win.
Preston Rind was a major factor on the mound for Los Gatos, striking out eight batters and helping himself with a run scored.
Raynaud also had a double and another single on the night, and Aaron Aguiar doubled and Marshall Finch knocked two singles for his squad.
Los Gatos would not have such a favorable outcome against the eventual tournament champs in its next game. Los Gatos faced Saratoga, who had yet to give up a run the entire tournament. Los Gatos lost 8-1, but was able to score the only run against Saratoga when Raynaud tripled and was driven home by Finch.
Earlier in the week, Los Gatos beat Quito 10-0. Jack Fordyce threw a complete game no-hit shutout with seven K's. Raynaud hammered two singles and scored two runs, while Finch also had a pair of hits and Comeau belted a triple.
Earlier still, Gatos faced Almaden North, losing 8-5. Comeau had two doubles, Raynaud and Rind each doubled and Fordyce scored twice in the loss.
Los Gatos National met Almaden South on July 3, winning 10-9. Larsen's bat was alive and full of vigor as he hammered a pair of singles and a double and was able to score twice in the process. Fordyce added two base knocks and a double, while Finch nailed three hits and scored three times. Rind had four RBIs on the night and scored twice, while Aguiar had two RBIs in the win.
Raynaud and Rind threw shutout innings in the fifth and sixth while Los Gatos rallied for seven runs to take the win in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Los Gatos American didn't fare as well in the tournament, only winning one of four games. The American team dropped its final game to Union 12-2 on July 10 and lost one to Branham Hills 6-1 on July 7. Cambrian defeated Los Gatos on July 3 on 10-0 and its only win came against Saratoga on a forfeit on July 2.
The Union 10-year-old all-star team knocked off Almaden on July 10. Jordan White and C.J. Meisenbach both pitched well for Union in the win. The pitching was aided by good hitting when Brad Delaplane blasted a two-run jack and Danny Rose and Justin Sanders each smashed two-run doubles.
The other players on the team were Jordan Claire, Robbie Ferrante, Scott Guyon, Daniel Kidman, Dallan Malcolmson, Keven Spear and Andrew Van Brunt.
