Rollin tosses first pitch in Arlington
By Dick Sparrer
There was a sellout crowd at Arlington's Ameriquest Field when Alex Rollin stepped to the mound to deliver a pitch when the Texas Rangers played host to the Houston Astros early this summer.

But Rollin wasn't making his Major League debut--not yet anyway. He was on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Rangers-Astros game.

The former Los Gatos High School star, now a standout pitcher at UC Berkeley, was selected by the Texas Collegiate League to throw out the night's first pitch. And for good reason--he'd just been named the TCL's June Pitcher of the Month.

It was just part of what has been an impressive summer season for the former Wildcat.

Through July 27, Rollin had not allowed a run in 37 innings in 12 appearances for the Graham Roughnecks. His 6-0 record is the best in the TCL, and he has three saves (fourth in the league) and 39 strikeouts (seventh in the league).

Rollin was named a TCL Pitcher of the Week in June, then went on to post a 3-0 record with two saves in the month, winning the TCL's Pitcher of the Month award. He was also selected to play in the league's all-star game.

Cal catcher Travis Howell, who played with Rollin at Los Gatos High, is also having a solid summer season. Howell is playing for the Thomasville Hi-Toms in the Coastal Plains League. He was batting .368 and had thrown out six of eight runners attempting to steal through the first month of the season.

Rollin and Howell were both Cal redshirts last spring after suffering minor injuries.

Reilly nominated

Shirley Reilly, a 2003 graduate of Los Gatos High School, was one of 42 athletes in the nation to be nominated for the 2004 U.S. Paralympic Track and Field team that will compete in Athens this summer. U.S. Paralympics is a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Caldwell an All-American

Former Los Gatos High School track and field star Ashley Caldwell won All-American honors in the 800 meters as a competitor at UCLA in the spring.

Caldwell, a 2001 Gatos grad, ran 2:06.1 in the NCAA meet, just missed earning a place in the NCAA finals by .001 of a second. Her mark and finish were still enough, though, to earn All-American honors.

Caldwell had finished second in the NCAA regionals a week earlier with a season best 2:05.01. In the fall, she won All-American honors on the UCLA cross country team.

Lepold, DiNapoli star

Josh Lepold and Emerson DiNapoli, both of Los Gatos, each finished seventh in their divisions at the Summer National Fencing championships held in Charlotte, N.C., this summer.

Lepold, who will be a senior at Los Gatos High School in the fall, was seventh in a 105-competitor field in the division 1-A men's foil event. With his finish, Lepold earned an A rating, the highest given by the U.S. Fencing Association, and he qualified for the Division 1 Men's Foil National Championships which will be held in Fresno in April of 2005.

DiNapoli, who enters his senior year at Bellarmine in the fall, ended up seventh in the field of 125 competitors in the junior (under 19) men's foil. DiNapoli is ranked 15th nationally in junior men's foil and will be a member of the Junior National Fencing Team that will represent the U.S. in the 200405 World Cup Fencing Series.

Quirke wins weights

Colin Quirke of Los Gatos won two events at the California State Games to qualify for the National Junior Olympics in track and field.

Quirke, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound incoming freshman at Los Gatos High School, won the shot put at 15.15 meters and the discus at 43.77 meters in San Diego to qualify for the national meet in Eugene, Ore.

Quirke graduated from C.T. English in the spring.

Williams wins

John Williams of St. Mary's School in Los Gatos had a big day at the 2004 Northern California Hershey Youth Track Meet held early this summer at San José City College.

Williams finished first in the standing long jump, second in the 400-meter run and third in the weighted throw.

Kristen Freitas of St. Mary's also won a silver medal, finishing second in the girls weighted throw.
