A musical version of the classic children's story The Velveteen Rabbit wraps up Children's Musical Theater San Jose's summer series. Just right for a family audience, the show features 116 6- to 9-year-olds from the theater group's Rising Stars troupe, interpreting the thoughtful story for the musical stage.
The book by Margery Williams tells the story of a little boy and his beloved toy rabbit that yearns to be real. In this new version, updated by the award-winning youth theater playwright James Still, the rabbit takes care of himself when his relationship with the little boy is threatened by the boy's older brother, who's more interested in skateboards and girls than stuffed animals. The Velveteen Rabbit features music by Jimmy Roberts, the composer of the off-Broadway hit I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.
CMT alumna Megan McGrath directs the show and fellow alumna Carey McCray choreographs. Longtime CMT designer Lorna McGrath created costumes for the young actors playing toys, fairies and rabbits. San José State University theater professor Jim Culley designed the set.
"The Velveteen Rabbit" runs Aug. 1215 at the Montgomery Theatre in downtown San Jose.
