Community foundation to give away a treasure chest at bandstand party
By Jennifer McBride
A treasure chest containing more than $5,000 worth of booty awaits all adventuresome Los Gatos residents on Aug. 28 at Oak Meadow Park. No, this isn't a pirate legend come to life—it's one of many features the Los Gatos Community Foundation hopes will entice hundreds to the town's second annual Bandstand Celebration.

The foundation has many events planned that planners hope will make this year's "Barbecue and Boogie" Bandstand Celebration a success. These include dinner catered by local restaurant C.B. Hannegan's, live dance music by local band Mack the Knife—which was a big hit at last year's event—a silent auction and a treasure-chest giveaway.

The foundation aims to sell 100 entries for the treasure-chest giveaway in the form of "keys." One buyer will end up with the key that opens the chest. Inside the chest, he or she will find more than $5,000 in prizes, including gift certificates and a Hawaiian holiday for two, courtesy of Ed Stahl of the Travel Advisors of Los Gatos. According to foundation marketing representative Darrell Monda, proceeds from keys sold will go toward paying off debt still owed for the construction of the bandstand.

Some items planned for the silent auction include eight games at Campo di Bocce with hors d'oeuvres and use of two vacation condos for a week, one in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and one in Indian Wells.

According to Jan Ewers, another representative for Bandstand Celebration preparations, a tribute to local soldiers fighting in the Middle East is also planned.

"At some point during the festivities, we will be honoring and reading the names of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno men and women who are serving, or have served, in Iraq and Afghanistan," she says. "Names will be provided by the Yellow Ribbon Project, one of the many funds under the Los Gatos Community Foundation umbrella."

The second annual Bandstand Celebration Barbecue and Boogie takes place Aug. 28 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Oak Meadow Park. Tickets are $65 per person, or $125 per couple, and are on sale now.
