Onyal Wayne Smith, 76, died on July 28 in Gilroy.

Smith was born in Sumner, N.M. He spent his childhood in Texas, and graduated from Moscow University in Idaho. He served in the U.S. Marines, and settled for a while in Seattle, Wash. He worked for PrePak Consolidated, building dams in the U.S. and overseas. He then moved to San Jose, where he helped make three auto dealerships number one in the nation: Sunnyvale Ford, Downtown Datsun and Oaktree Mazda. He and his wife Donna lived in Los Gatos for 35 years.

Smith is survived by his wife, Donna Hines-Smith; three children, Daryl, Mark and Valerie, and five grandchildren.
