People from all over the country descended upon the La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos on July 31 for something of a homecoming.
Those responsible for the overtaking were the alumni of Los Gatos High School. An impressive 250 people from the graduating classes of 1963, 1964 and 1965 came together on that night for a reunion like no other. Former classmates from as far as Florida, Texas, Colorado, Indiana, Idaho, Illinois, Utah, Oregon and Washington came out in record numbers for the occasion. The evening included a buffet dinner and dancing to songs of the 1960s and 1970s on a programmed jukebox.
Many old memories were shared. Before the reunion, a special website for the three classes was created. It included a dedication to class members who had passed away and stories that classmates sent in to share. One such story spoke of how some classmates used to love going "slim-sliding" down the slippery face of the Guadalupe Dam in the Los Gatos hills.
"It all went by too quickly," said Anne and John Taughinbaugh, longtime Monte Sereno residents, still living locally after graduating in the classes of 1964 and 1963, respectfully.
Alumni who left the area after graduation had plenty of questions for those who have stayed behind and witnessed all of the town's changes over the years. Beth Cilker Smith and Bob Allen are two such residents and former classmates from 1965. When one guest at the reunion asked what had happened to the outdoor basketball courts that used to be at the school, Smith and Allen told of how they had been replaced with new classrooms.
Anne Taughinbaugh says everyone seemed to have a fantastic time, and most danced the night away—until a waiter finally came and unplugged the jukebox.
