Los Gatos man charged in the stabbing death of his wife
By Grant Shellen
A Los Gatos man has been charged with stabbing and beating his wife to death.

Andrea Smith, 52, was found dead at about 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 5 in the couple's Cleland Avenue apartment after neighbors called police to report a disturbance. She had sustained blunt-trauma and stab wounds.

Police also found 58-year-old Larry Louis Saltarelli inside, alive but suffering from apparently self-inflicted injuries.

Los GatosMonte Sereno Police Capt. Dave Gravel said the couple had been married for about one year but was in the middle of divorce proceedings.

They both lived in the apartment and had no children together. Smith is survived by two adult daughters.

Saltarelli was treated for his injuries at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He was arrested and administratively booked the day of the incident until being formally charged with homicide Sept. 9. He is being held without bail. Smith was the director of an assisted-living facility in Fremont. Saltarelli is unemployed.
