The fifth annual Bloom-A-Thon returns to Los Gatos on Nov. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m., and residents of all ages are encouraged to dig out their gardening gloves, spades and boots.
Even though the event is still months away, organizers are hoping to form a dedicated crew of volunteers in advance. Participants will meet at the Los Gatos Town Plaza that afternoon to receive assignments of where they'll be planting an array of mostly yellow daffodils and blue hyacinths, said Shirley Henderson, co-owner of Antiquarium and a longtime community volunteer.
The event is a joint effort on the part of the town of Los Gatos, the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee and Raymond J. Fisher Middle School's Club Live program, an offshoot of Community Against Substance Abuse. Henderson is also a member of the beautification committee and is organizing the event in collaboration with Los Gatos resident Chris Miller.
In past years, Henderson said, they've planted flowers in parking lots, at Oak Meadow Park, at Fairview Plaza Park, along the Los Gatos Creek Trail, by the Forbes Mill Museum, in front of Town Hall and at Blossom Hill Elementary School, to name some of the locations. Adult volunteers including Gary Schloh and Councilman Joe Pirzynski planted flowers one year on a traffic median, Henderson said, adding that adults rather than children plant at the busier locations.
Patti Hughes, who lives off Summit Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains at the Maison du Lac property, and her helpers are responsible for the flowers near the Highway 17 entrance and exit by the Toll House Hotel. Henderson said the spots they've planted in past years are in need of some replanting. She added that the fruits of all the labor will bloom in the spring.
"It's so rewarding, because you drive around and there are daffodils everywhere," she said. "We had good luck last year because we had some rain right before planting."
