Three players topped the 100-yard rushing mark and Ryan Black threw for another 100-plus yards to lead the Los Gatos frosh-soph football team to a rousing 46-12 opening night victory over Aragon on Sept. 9.
Nick Kalpin was the offensive and defensive leader for the young Wildcats in the win. Kalpin led the ground with three for 147 yards and a touchdown, and he also led the defense with seven tackles.
Joining Kalpin in the century club were running backs Dustin Wynne, with 119 yards on nine attempts, and Aaron Miller, with 11 carries for 113 yards and three touchdowns.
Not to be left out, Anthony Ladd chipped with 73 yards on seven tries and he also scored a touchdown.
"Offensively, I was very pleased with how we moved the ball," said Los Gatos coach Dale Gustafson, whose club rushed for 541 yards and finished the night with 643 yards of total offense. "The line did a great job of getting off the ball, and our backs hit the holes very well."
The coach was also pleased with the work of his quarterback.
"Ryan Black did a nice job running the offense," said Gustafson.
Black led the Cats threw the air, completing 8 of 17 passes for 102 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Robbie Comeau snagged three of the tosses for 29 yards and both TDs, and Karlo Winkleman had two catches for 42 yards.
Supporting Kalpin defensively were Wesley Howell, Steffen Hack and Wynne with four tackles each. Wynne sacked the Aragon quarterback twice in the win and Hack dropped him once.
"On defense we shut them down early on, not giving up a first down until the second half," added the coach. "We did a decent job with our assignments and reads. We were good at getting to the ball as a team."
"I was very happy with how our team executed overall," said Gustafson.
