Some things never go out of style; they just keep improving, or getting improved, with age. Take, for example, the music of Irish band Lúnasa. The quintet specializes in traditional Irish dance music, but Lúnasa gives these instrumental tunes a new edge, integrating amped-up rhythms and new harmonies into a sound that remains quintessentially Irish. Lúnasa will perform a one-night-only concert at the San José Repertory Theatre on Sept. 27.
Just as time hasn't stood still in the band's renderings of old tunes, the band itself hasn't stood still for even a moment. In 2003 alone, the group made three tours of the United States, and the previous year, during tours of both North America and Europe, recorded its fourth album in studios in California and Ireland.
Even before Lúnasa began making marathon tours--in fact, before Lúnasa existed--band members had had plenty of experience in everything from traditional Irish dance music to rock.
Some San José Rep audiences may remember the band from its musical contributions to the Rep's fall 2001 production of By the Bog of Cats, which starred Holly Hunter.
Concert-goers will have a chance to meet the band at a reception at O'Flaherty's Pub on San Pedro Square following the performance.
Lúnasa performs Sep. 27, 7 p.m. at San José Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo de San Antonio, San Jose. Tickets are $15$27 for the concert; $25 at the door or $20 in advance. for the post-show reception; $75 seating in first two orchestra rows plus reception and CD or T-shirt.
