Highway 9 safety project needs community support with letters
By Lisa Toth
A group of Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga residents, who formed an organization called Citizens for Highway 9 Safety, is asking the community for help.

The city of Monte Sereno is currently requesting $2.4 million in grant funds through a regional bicycle and pedestrian program to design and implement bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements along Highway 9.

The approval of this request is being reviewed by the Valley Transportation Authority. The grant would be funded by VTA through the state's Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

Monte Sereno residents Lana Malloy and JoAnne Peth, who live along Highway 9 and co-founded Citizens for Highway 9 Safety, said they need the community's help in writing letters in support of the project.

A sample letter is available at www.highway9safety.com, and can be used as written or re-worded.

"Support from the community is one of the things these public grants really look for," Peth said. "The more we can show going in, the more of a chance we have of getting this approved."

All letters need to be signed and received by the Monte Sereno city offices by Nov. 12. Peth said she's happy to pick up letters and deliver them for local residents.
