Young Cats complete solid season
By Dick Sparrer
Homestead presented the Los Gatos frosh-soph football team with a some real challenges last Friday night. The Mustangs hit hard, and they showed the Wildcats many different defensive looks.

But the Wildcats had a couple of challenges for Homestead, too, and they were just a little more basic—like an offense that scored 24 points and a defense that gave up none.

The result was a season-ending 24-0 win for the Cats over the Mustangs, a win that left Los Gatos 8-2 for the season.

"We finished off a good season after a hard-hitting game against Homestead," said Gatos coach Dale Gustafson after the one-sided win. "Homestead showed us a lot of different things on defense, but our line did a good job of picking up the blitz and [Nick] Kalpin and [Aaron] Miller ran really tough in between the tackles."

Kalpin and Miller combined for 138 yards on the ground and Ryan Black threw for 65 yards to lead the Cats to the victory.

"We took the ball right down the field on a 10-play, 76-yard drive to start the game and never looked back," added the coach.

Kalpin capped the opening drive with a 30-yard touchdown run. Later in the game he scored on a 22-yard dash and finished the night with 67 yards rushing.

Miller didn't score, but he led the ground attack with 71 yards. Anthony Ladd supported with 22 yards rushing.

Black hit on 7 of 10 passes for 65 yards, including an 8-yard TD toss to Karlo Winkleman. Robbie Comeau caught a pair of passes and Jessie Tinsley, Steffen Hack, Michael Barden and Nick Smith also had receptions.

Michael Barden drilled a 22-yard field goal to cap the scoring for the Cats and he also booted three extra points.

But as good as the Cats were on offense, they were better on defense.

"Defensively, our guys were outstanding," said Gustafson. "We held Homestead to four first downs the entire game."

Comeau and Kalpin led the defense with six tackles apiece and Tim Sweeney and Wes Howell were in on five tackles each.

"I'm extremely proud of this team," said Gustafson. "Our guys worked hard all year, were prepared for each game and played the game with a lot of heart."
