Just as disco mania swept the nation in the 1970s, it's also sweeping the stage here in Los Gatos.

The 55-member cast of Friday Knight Fever, a '70s musical comedy tribute to disco, is coming to Louise Van Meter Elementary School. This will be the 10th anniversary performance by the Bulldog Players, the student-acting group named after Van Meter's mascot.

The show is expected to sell out the school multi-purpose room, so those who want to see the play are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. The performance dates are Jan. 28 and 29 at 7 p.m., and Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. The general admission ticket price is $8.

Not only have the students been rehearsing for two hours almost every day after school for the past two months, parents of the cast members have also been putting in at least 10 hours of volunteer time too, making everything from the costumes to the elaborate set, said parent volunteer Elyse Musen, also a well-known thespian.

While the movie Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta would be considered inappropriate for young children, Friday Knight Fever is a more G-rated spin off for the theater featuring disco dancing, kick boxing and lots of laughter at Rita's Roller Skate Rink.

"It's as if they've created an entirely new show," Musen said. "The action takes place in a rink that has become such a shambles that they have to build a new rink."

Students Ellie Foy, who plays Rita the roller skate rink owner, Kyle Kevorkian, who plays Buzz the jewel thief, and Katie Musen, who plays one of the backup singers with "The Alleycats," said they all love acting and dancing and hope to continue their careers in theater as they get older.

"If someone were describing someone who had stage fright that wouldn't be me," Katie said. "I've always dreamed of being in a movie one day."

Kyle said they'll also be putting on a school assembly prior to the performance dates, which will showcase some of the best scenes in the play. Fifth-grade students are assigned the lead roles, Ellie added.

"The audience will be in awe of the costumes and the special effects," Musen said. "The cast knows their lines, and the choreography is very sophisticated."

The production is based on the book by Rachel Davidson, with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur. It's being directed and choreographed by a professional mother-daughter duo, Kris Andrews and her daughter Cait Andrews of Campbell. The producers include parents Barbara Fang and Michelle Noskowski, with music directed by parent Sivi Van Gundy.
