Gatos girls blank Saratoga—twice

It's said that, if the conditions are right, any team can win on any given day—but beating the same team twice in one week? That has to say something for the ability of the Los Gatos girls soccer team as they shut out Saratoga 2-0 on Jan. 24 and at 5-0 later in the week.

Katie Bonadies and Melissa Shawhan spearheaded the Wildcats latest attack on the Falcons. Shawhan was able to assist Bonadies not only once, but for two goals in the first 15 minutes. Bonadies knocked in her first goal of the day after only eight minutes had ticked off the clock and then she pounded in her second goal 11 minutes into the game.

Monica Rude set up Susie Brewster for the third goal of the day. Brewster kicked in her score after 35 minutes to give Los Gatos a commanding 3-0 lead. Rude also assisted Sofie Lynn three minutes later. Josie Hall scored 64 minutes deep into the game on the assist by Lynn.

Los Gatos outshot the Falcons 21-7 in the win. The Wildcats had six corner kicks to just four for Saratoga.

Earlier in the week, Rude connected with Shawhan for the first Wildcat score in the 2-0 win. Shawhan knocked a shot past the Falcon defenders 22 minutes into the game to give Gatos the lead.

Lynn assisted Carly Stavis to add to the Wildcat lead. Stavis booted her goal into the net 72 minutes in the game.

After last week's wins over Saratoga, Los Gatos is now 6-0-3 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and 13-2-4 overall. The Cats were to face Palo Alto on Jan. 31 in a make-up of a game that was rained out on Jan. 26.

The junior varsity Wildcats fared as well as the varsity, winning both of their games last week.

Lindsay Ackerman led the Cats with two goals in a 5-1 win over Saratoga. Sammy Moser, Christine Scales and Emily Smart each contributed a goal in the win.

It was Ackerman again who dominated the field for the Wildcats against Mountain View. Ackerman scored two of the three goals in Los Gatos' 3-2 win.

Moser scored the last goal of the game to help clinch the victory for the junior varsity Wildcats.

Los Gatos knocked in a couple of second-half goals, but it wasn't enough for the Wildcats in a 4-3 El Camino Division loss to Homestead. The Cats slipped to 4-2-1 in the division and to 5-6-1 overall with the defeat.

Brennan Kresser drilled a first-half goal, but the Cats were down 2-1 at intermission.

Daniel Langhoff scored off a Jeremy Cleveland assist and Kevin Bakken drove home a penalty kick in the second half. But the Mustangs matched the Cats' offensive output to hold onto the one-goal lead and the victory.
