Gaspar, Lopez nail seconds at KBell Classic track meet
By Dick Sparrer
It was a great day for Loyola's Mark Matusak. And it wasn't too a bad day for Don Gaspar and Devin Lopez of Los Gatos either.

Matusak topped the field when he set a new track record in the 1,600-meter run at the KBell Classic held last Saturday at the Los Gatos High School track, and Gaspar and Lopez were tops for the Wildcats, each placing second in his specialty.

Matusak, from Loyola in Southern California, and Joseph Ghebray of James Logan High School in Union City were matched a thrilling race in the 1,600. Matusak romped to a record 4:10.71 with Ghebray close behind in 4:12.90.

"It was a great race for such an early meet," said Los Gatos coach Thomas Newman. "It was truly a treat to watch."

But it was also a treat for Newman to watch the performances of his Wildcats, especially Gaspar and Lopez.

Gaspar stopped the watch at 1:58.09 in the 800 meters, good for a second-place finish.

"That's one of the top marks in the section right now," said Newman.

And Lopez heaved the shot put 52-10.75 to nail second place in the meet.

"That's also one of the top marks in the section, if not the leading mark," added Newman.

Sophomore Matthew Petrillo won the frosh-soph 3,200 meters in 9:55.91, missing the meet record by just a second. He came back to finish fifth in the 1,600 meters in 4:41.33.

Sophomore Jimmy Jatho was fourth in the frosh-soph 1,600 in a personal best 4:41.04 and freshman Rye Livingston was 11th in 4:50.49.

Newman also praised both freshman Michael Johnson and sophomore Jon Berthet for "great doubles"--Johnson in the 3,200 (10:29.24) and the 1,600 (4:53.65) and Berthet in the 800 (2:06.31) and the 1,600 (5:57.25)

In other frosh-soph results, Randall Horn was third in the discus at 120-1.5 with Colin Quirke fourth at 118-2.5, and Quirke was sixth in the shot put at 47-2 with Horn eighth at 42-5.25.

Jatho and Berthet, helped the 4x400 relay finish fifth in 3:46.55.

Earlier in the week, Kevin Rutledge had soared to a new freshman record in the triple jump with a 42-7 effort in a varsity meet against Lynbrook. The Wildcats lost to the Vikings 67-60.

Rutledge was a double winner, taking the triple jump and also winning the long jump at 18-10.

Petrillo was a twin winner in the mile in 4:54.89 and the 2-mile in 11:11.10, and Lopez won both the shot put at 52-5.5 and the discus at 129-10.5. Gaspar added a win in the 800 meters in 2:04.17.
