Going 3 for 3 is a great way to start off a baseball season. But for Jon Williams of the Tigers in the Los Gatos Little League major division, it means something more than getting three hits in three at-bats. In the first three games of the season, Williams has already belted three home runs.
The Tigers played their third game of the season on March 10 against the A's, with the Tigers winning 13-5. Williams topped the hill, striking out seven in three shutout innings. But Williams also had three hits on the day, including his third homer of the year.
Bryan Rose also had three hits, two runs-batted-in and scored twice for the Tigers. Nick Lamson scored three times, while Chase Mardesich, David Anderson and J. Lowe each had two hits.
Henry Kuckens was the only player for the A's to stand out, scoring twice.
On March 9, the Red Sox defeated the Royals. Devon Patterson had two hits and scored three times, while Natalie Gibbens and Teddy Enfantino both scored twice for the Sox.
Peter Danna hammered a single and a double for the Royals in the loss.
The Cubs turned back the Diamondbacks 7-3. Tyler Olivet fanned seven in three innings. Greg Mayo, who was behind the plate for the Cubbies, had two hits and two RBIs on the day.
The Yanks beat the Orioles in the second week of the season, with Gavin Honda on the hill, getting five outs by way of strikes. Honda also added three hits to the offensive attack, while Marshall Finch hammered two hits and scored three times. Tyler Litle threw two innings, but his major contribution was his triple and single, scoring three times.
Ben Rosenberg of the O's struck out three in his time on the mound and added two hits and scored twice. Michael Armstrong also helped with two hits.
The Cardinals and Giants played a doubleheader, with each team going home with a win. The Cards won the first game 8-4 and the Giants took the second 8-3.
Nick LaBombarda struck out seven in the first game for the Giants and helped himself out with a single and a double.
In the second game, Tom McCullough fanned four in three shutout innings, while teammate Lucas Alonso got his first hit in the majors.
The Cubs defeated the Astros 3-2 with Curtis Briedenthal throwing two innings with five K's for the Cubs. Olivet also struck out five in three shutout innings.
Michael Murano and Matt Bergandi each topped the hill for three innings for the Astros, with Murano fanning six and tossing three no-hit innings, while Bergandi struck out four with two no-hit innings. Marcus DeVarona doubled for the Astros.
The Diamondbacks and the Reds met for the second time in the season with the D'backs winning 4-3. Patrick Shultz was on the mound for three innings for the D'backs and scored two runs to help his cause offensively. Robbie Dunne finished the game on the hill with six K's. The Reds led 3-1 in the sixth before Vincent Augustine of the Diamondbacks crushed a triple to knock in two runs to tie the game and Ian McBeth hit a double, driving in Augustine for the winning run.
Austin Rise of the Reds began the game on the hill, throwing three shutout innings. R. Gasvoda had two hits for the Reds.
The Royals bested the Yankees 9-2. Danna threw three no-hit, no-run innings for the Royals and hammered two hits, driving in two runs. P. Perry had two hits and scored twice for the Royals.
The Red Sox defeated the A's 11-3 with Hayden Hibberd throwing three innings with eight strikeouts. He also had two singles, a double and three runs scored for the Sox. David Picone had a single and a double and scored two runs.
The A's had Joey Comeau and Nick Zapata on the mound. Zapata finished with six strikeouts in three innings and knocked in two runs. Jake Raynaud had two singles and triple and scored twice for the A's. Kuckens had two hits for the A's.
The Tigers and Orioles met for the second time with the Tigers leaving victorious. Williams crushed his second home run of the season in the first inning and stood atop the rubber for the Tigers. Williams struck out six and knocked in three runs in the game. Lamson had four hits, scored twice and brought in three runs for the Tigers. Mardesich also had three hits and hammered in five runs.
Alex Nemriov scored two runs and Bryan Houp went 2 for 2 for the O's.
The Yankees defeated the Royals 6-4 for their first win of the season. Honda and Litle stood atop the rubber for the Yanks. Honda struck out six and roped a triple to help himself out offensively.
Kyre Vega threw the first three for the Royals, fanning six, and then was relieved by Dayna in the fourth.
The A's dropped their first game to the Red Sox on March 2, 4-1. Matt Church and Hibberd shared duties on the hill, but it was Hibberd who shined. Hibberd struck out eight and also ripped two doubles and scored twice for the Sox.
Raynaud threw six innings for the A's, striking out 10 and adding a single and a double to the offensive attack. Zapata went 3 for 3 with a double.
The Tigers and Orioles met in the second game on the season, with the O's coming away victorious 4-2. Preston Rind threw three innings for the Orioles, striking out six, but also was a big help offensively with two hits and two RBIs.
The Tigers may have lost the game, but they definitely had the hit of the day, when Williams smashed the first home run of the season in the fifth. Jim Kraus began the game on the mound with Lamson taking over in the fourth.
The Diamondbacks hosted the Reds with Dunne starting on the hill for the D-Backs. Dunne fanned seven and allowed only two runs in the first three innings of the 10-9 loss to the Reds. Danny DeFever ripped the first hit of the season in the bottom of the first. Dunne added his bat to his pitching skills, going 3 for 3 and scoring three times. Shultz went 2 for 2 and scored three times, while Brandon Campbell had the big hit of the day--a triple in the second inning.
