There's a saying, "Like father, like son." But as far as the Los Gatos volleyball teams are concerned, the saying goes more, "Like varsity, like junior varsity."
Both teams met Wilcox on March 15, and both came away with victories. The varsity squad defeated Wilcox 25-13, 25-12 and 25-22, and the junior varsity won 25-11, 23-25, 15-7. Later in the week, the Wildcats faced Saratoga with the varsity winning 25-14, 25-15, 25-20 and the JVs winning 25-19, 25-22.
Against Wilcox, Cody Stewart and Sam Moisenco were the kill leaders for the varsity, with Stewart hammering down nine and Moisenco adding eight. Frank Fritsch, Kevin Shain and Peter Graham each had three kills. Eric Rowell, a setter, had two kills, while Alex Clark and Dan Kent had one apiece.
Fritsch and Moisenco had a solo block each. Fritsch also had four block assists and Moisenco had one.
Stewart, Brian Register and Dan Norvelle each played well in the backcourt, adding strong passing in the win. Moisenco, Shain, Dan Langholff and Kent each had two aces on the night. Register and Rowell had an ace each. Rowell added 28 assists in the match.
Later in the week, Los Gatos met Saratoga for the first time in the season and rolled to the easy win.
Register was the kill leader for the Wildcats with seven, and Kris Haushalter and Moisenco each added six. Stewart, Fritsch and Clark had four kills each, and Langholff, Graham and Shain had two kills apiece.
Langholff and Register also added their serving expertise with two aces each, while Graham and Rowell each had one.
Fritsch, Graham, Clark and Rowell each had a solo block at the net, and Rob Couchee had two. Moisenco and Haushalter had three blocks each with Register and Clark adding two more each.
The Wildcats traveled to Santa Barbara on March 19 to take part in the Dos Pueblos Tournament and will face Santa Clara on March 24, 7 p.m., at home.
The junior varsity Cats beat Falcons in two straight. Bryce Byrd was kill leader for Los Gatos with four. He was followed by Martin Eggers with three and Chris Renfer, Trevor Stephenson, Ryan Magnin, Jake Haueter and Justin Whitely with one each. Eggers also had nine assists on the day, while Renfer, Magnin, Byrd and Whitely helped from the back row. Eggers served four aces while Whitely, Haueter, Byrd, Magnin and Taylor Stephens each had an ace.
The JVs beat Wilcox in three games. Eggers had 10 assists in the match. Whitely and Kevin Rutledge had four kills each, Haueter had two, and Eggers had three in the match. Whitely served eight aces, while Rutledge had three, Eggers and Aleksey Pavlov two each and Stephens one. Haueter had the only solo block for the Wildcats.
The JVs traveled to Santa Barbara on March 12 to take part in the San Marcos JV Challenge, which was their first tournament of the season. The Wildcats finished second in the round-robin tournament.
Los Gatos struggled in its first game, losing to Camarillo 25-24, only to come back with a vengeance in the second game and win 25-13. Then Los Gatos defeated Carpenteria 25-9, 25-8. The Wildcats went on to defeat Righetti 25-9, 25-24 and Oxnard 25-17, 25-12. San Marcos, the tournament host, was the first team to defeat the Wildcats, winning 25-22, 25-14. The Cats faced Carpenteria again in the semifinals and won 25-20. The finals pitted Los Gatos against San Marcos once again, but despite a strong Wildcat effort they fell again 25-18.
Whitely led the team with 22 kills in the tournament. Renfer served 12 aces and had 46 digs to lead the team.
