The Wildcats are up to their old tricks again. With the junior varsity volleyball team taking a break, thanks to Santa Clara's lack of a JV team, the Los Gatos boys varsity volleyball squad breezed past the Bruins 25-7, 25-16, 25-18 on March 24.
Rob Couchee and Eric Rowell worked well together, setting up seven players for at least one kill on the night. Rowell had 16 assists in the first two games, while Couchee came away with six in the third game.
Kevin Shain was the kill leader with seven, while both Peter Graham and Kris Haushalter added five to the total.
Cody Stewart and Chris Renfer joined in with their serving expertise, serving three aces apiece in the win.
Rowell and Couchee also added two aces each, while Shain had one.
The front row was doing its job well at the line, stopping the ball on multiple occasions with sometimes as many as three people. Graham was the strongest at the net with two solo blocks and two assists. Alex Clark also had two solo blocks and Haushalter and Dan Langholff added two assists each.
Shain, Langholff, Stewart, Renfer and Graham did their jobs in the back row, handling the passing and digging which allowed the setters to do their work.
Los Gatos also played its way to a fifth-place finish at the Dos Pueblos tournament in Santa Barbara on March 21. Los Gatos' first match of the day was against Santa Ynez, and the Cats pulled out a tight 26-24, 27-25 win. Sam Moisenco dominated the front with 17 kills, and Cody Stewart supported with six.
Rowell had a great day with 27 assists in the match. Langholff, Dan Norvelle, Stewart and Register all had key passing from the back row.
The Wildcats' split its second match with Peninsula 18-25, 25-21. Register led the way with eight kills and Moisenco added seven. Moisenco, Register, Norvelle and Couchee each had one ace in the match and Couchee had 20 assists.
In the third match of the day the Wildcats downed Agoura 25-15, 25-16. Moisenco led again with four kills, while Rowell and Langholff added an ace each and Couchee had nine assists.
In the final match of pool play, Los Gatos defeated Chatsworth 25-22, 25-19. Register was kill leader with six and Rowell had the only ace in the match.
After winning in pool play, the Wildcats faced the tournament host, San Marco, and won 25-23, 25-18. Moisenco led again with nine kills, followed closely by Stewart with eight and Register with seven. Moisenco had the only ace of the match and Rowell had 24 assists.
Los Gatos lost to the eventual tournament champion, Loyola, in three games in the quarterfinals, 25-23, 15-25, 15-13. Moisenco was again kill leader with 11, while Couchee handled the assists with 18.
