Tharp's work takes on international appeal

Mary Ann Cook By Mary Ann Cook

THARP DID IT—IN SINGAPORE: Silicon Valley Community Newspapers publisher David Cohen, on vacation in Singapore, was leafing through a book about corporate logos while wife Barbara picked out some reading matter in preparation for their long air ride home. As David randomly opened the book in the middle, the first thing his eye lit on was the logo of one of his newspapers.

The logo pictured was that of the Almaden Resident newspaper in a book titled Logo Lounge 2. "It made the trip!" Mr. C. exclaimed. Los Gatan Rick Tharp of Tharp Did It! was the designer of that one and most of the Community Newspapers' logos—including the one for the Los Gatos Weekly-Times.

Tharp recently tweaked the corporate logo, making the words "community newspaper" larger to better brand the product. The full name, however, remains Silicon Valley Community Newspapers. It's not often one spots his own newspaper logo in a rack on the other side of the world: It's a small world.

The Cohens were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with this March visit to Singapore and Hong Kong, even though their actual date is New Year's Eve. David had been to that country 12 years ago, found Raffles Hotel to be one of the most elegant he had ever visited and vowed to bring his wife there sometime.

NATIONAL HONORS: Joann Milburn and Carlos Benitez were awarded the national Frist Humanitarian Award from HCA, the parent company of Good Samaritan Hospital. The two won the award locally and were then nominated for the national recognition, beating out 180 other applicants.

It was the first time in 32 years that a volunteer and a staff member from the same hospital had won the award. Milburn received the accolade for her work nurturing preemies at Good Sam. She was instrumental in starting the program.

Benitez is the housekeeping supervisor who goes above and beyond the usual duties in that role. He is active in his church and his community and with Flying Doctors, having flown several missions with that agency in a non-clinical capacity, acting as bus driver and assembling wheelchairs.

Both Good Sam recipients will receive $5,000 personally and another $5,000 to be given to the charities of their choice. Along with their spouses, they will be feted at the award ceremonies in Nashville later this month.

RETIREMENT: Paul Huber, president and CEO of A&D Engineering, Inc., in Milpitas retired as of April 1. During Huber's 17years at A&D, the company's annual revenues grew from $9 million to $40 million, a testament to his effective stewardship.

He was praised as an exceptional planner and a visionary leader who values the contributions of each member of the company by Masatake Eto, board member. Teruhisa Moriya succeeds Huber as president and CEO.

A&D produces measurement equipment and systems. It has offices in Japan, Australia, Korea, Great Britain and China, as well as the United States.

CATS REVERED IN BORNEO, TOO: Los Gatan Joseph Poppo has just returned from a trip to Kuching in the province of Sarawak, Borneo, in East Malaysia and was fascinated to learn that kuching means cat in Malay and that that country celebrates the cat, somewhat as Los Gatos does.

Poppo sent a photo that shows four or five life-size cats cavorting in a structure outside the Kuching Holiday Inn. There are other sculptures, as well, throughout the city, he says, commemorating el gato/kuching.

SENIOR TALENT SHOW: Here's the lineup for the Senior Idol Talent Show on April 7 at 1 p.m. at Los Gatos United Methodist Church. Participants include Rosalind Chase at the piano; Bill Hershberger on concertina; and June Thatcher, vocalist.

Also appearing are Debbie Kranefuss, singer (and director of the Live Oak Senior Nutrition and Service Center); Anna Saurara with a karaoke number; Linda Gallo and Tom McKissick with a Beatles interpretation; and Bev Myer's dance group, the Sizzling Seniors. Gallo is the town senior coordinator. The show is sponsored by the 55+ program. For more information, call 408.354.1514.

FOR REHAB: The Soroptimists club has raised $13,000 though its yearly fashion show. The money will be used for scholarships and charities. The club donates to the Saratoga Senior Center, but its major contribution goes to support House on the Hill, a substance abuse rehabilitation residence for women with children. The women learn parenting skills as part of the program.
