Wildcats sweep to win over Pioneers

Beating Cupertino was as easy as one-two-three for the Los Gatos girls swimming and diving team last Friday afternoon—at least in four of the nine individual events contested.

The Gatos girls swept the Pioneers in the 100-yard butterfly, 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and diving as they splashed to a convincing 120-60 victory over Cupertino.

The win helped Los Gatos improve to 4-0 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The girls remain as the only unbeaten team in the division with just two meets left—April 8 at Wilcox and April 15 at Fremont.

The boys, meanwhile, slipped to 1-3 in the division after losing 121-54 to the Pioneers on Friday. Only a win by freshman diver Enguerand Naveau kept the Wildcats from getting swept in the win column.

Still, it's not all doom and gloom for the Gatos boys, whose only win this season came in a tight 89-87 decision over Santa Clara. Los Gatos is a senior-less squad, and there are only four juniors on the otherwise freshman and sophomore laden roster of 14 swimmers and divers.

It's just about the same story for the Gatos girls. Kristen Chang is the only senior on the varsity squad, and there are only seven juniors on the team of 26 competitors.

Despite their youth, the Los Gatos girls are primed to win the school's first league swimming title in nearly two decades.

Freshmen Sarah Safir and Molly Hayes, sophomore Lisa Ratzliff and junior Katie Sweeney all led sweeps for the Cats in last week's win over the Pioneers.

Safir was tops in the 100 fly in 1:02.20 with Taryn Hunter second and Melissa Coleman third, and Hayes ran up 257.45 points to win the diving event with Alexa Chavez second and Christine Grubb third.

Safir was also first in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.21 with Renee Okholm third, and the freshman joined with Caitlin Espe, Coleman and Eloise Nichols to take the 200 medley relay in 1:59.59 and with Alyssa Uno, Coleman and Nichols to win the 200 free relay in 1:47.09.

Ratzliff breezed to a first in the 500 free in 5:39.71 with Alyssa Uno second and Jessica Safir third, and she was also first in the 200 free in 2:08.15 with J. Safir third.

Sweeney cruised to a win in the 100 breast in 1:16.40 with Espe second and Courtney Hawker third.

Nichols won the 100 free in 56.55 with Uno third, and Coleman took the 50 free in 27.45 with Kelly Boland third. Hunter added a second in the 200 individual medley with Hawker third.

In the boys meet the same day, Naveau rolled up 145.75 points to win the diving event, but Cupertino swept to all of the other victories in the meet.

Griffin Lerman was a top finisher for the Gatos boys, getting second in both the 200 free (2:04.75) and the 100 free (56.84). Thirds went to Michael Shamshoian in the 200 free, Robert Rose in the 200 IM, Brett Krouskup in the 50 free, Mike Masterman in the 100 back and John Gallien in the
100 breast.

The Gatos boys opened league with losses to Lynbrook (138-40) and Milpitas (111-58) before beating Santa Clara. Naveau was a diving winner against the Vikings and Lerman won the 200 free against the Trojans. Ben Draa took the 50 free and 100 fly and Lerman won the 100 free in the win over the Bruins. Draa, Rose, Shamshoian and Jacob Finkle teamed for a win in the 400 free relay to clinch the team win.

The girls opened with wins over Lynbrook (123-59), Milpitas (153-33) and Santa Clara (120-60) before beating Cupertino.
