Volleyball team sweeps to wins over Saratoga and Fremont
By Kevin Sparrer
Sweeping is what the Los Gatos boys volleyball team does best.

The Wildcats seem to be getting in the habit of sweeping their opponents, and they did it twice last week--sweeping Fremont in three games on April 5 and then sweeping Saratoga in three straight on April 7.

In the match against Fremont, Los Gatos won 25-17, 25-18, 25-22. Brian Register was the kill leader with 11, trailed closely by Sam Moisenco with nine and Frank Fritsch with eight. The team's defense held up well with five solo blocks on the night with Moisenco having two, Fritsch having two and Register having one.

Dan Norvelle, Chris Renfer, Dan Langholff and Dan Kent all added their expertise in the back with quality digging and passing. Moisenco had three service aces and Register had one. Rob Couchee finished with 35 assists in the match.

Los Gatos then defeated Saratoga in another three straight games, 25-14, 25-19, 25-21. This time it was Fritsch who led in kills with 10. Steve Conry was second in the kill count with six. Kevin Shain and Eric Rowell each had two aces in the match and Moisenco had one. Fritsch proved invaluable at the net with seven blocks, two being solo. Moisenco, Shain and Conry each had a solo block as well.

Renfer, Langholff and Conry all played well in the back with strong passing and digging. Rowell had 27 assists on the night. The win brought the Wildcats' record to 16-2 overall and 8-0 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The junior varsity team almost fared as well as the varsity in its match with Fremont. Though they won, it took the Wildcats an extra game to do it, 19-25, 25-15, 15-12. Kevin Rutledge was the kill leader for the junior varsity Wildcats with 12 and he was followed by Bryce Bryd with seven. Justin Whiteley and Aleksey Pavlov each had 11 digs from the back row. Jake Haueter had two aces, and Rutledge, Pavlov and Taylor Stephens had one each. Haueter had 23 assists in the match.
