Timeless 'Tapestry'
The musical revisits songs that made scribe Carole King an icon
By Heather Zimmerman
During the 1950s and '60s, with songs like "Up on the Roof," and "One Fine Day" becoming big hits for groups like the Drifters and the Chiffons, songwriter Carole King's tunes were widely heard, but her name wasn't well known. King's second solo album, Tapestry, changed all that. American Musical Theatre of San Jose pays tribute to King with a show named after her landmark album. Tapestry: A Musical Revue Based on the Music of Carole King opens April 12 in San Jose.

Though King made her solo debut in 1970, it was the release of Tapestry a year later that really got King the performer noticed. The Grammy-winning album featured new works by King, such as "You've Got a Friend," and some of her songs that were already hits for other artists, including "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."

This production stars Bay Area favorites including James Monroe Iglehart and Travis Poelle, and marks the company directorial debut of American Musical Theatre's new artistic director, Tim Bair.

American Musical Theatre of San Jose presents "Tapestry: A Musical Revue Based on the Music of Carole King" April 12-April 24 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, 255 Almaden Blvd, San Jose. $45-$72. 888.455.SHOW or www.amtsj.org.
