Annual concert showcases new works for taiko drums
By Heather Zimmerman
In its 32 years of existence, San Jose Taiko has become a favorite local performance group. Part of what makes San Jose Taiko popular is that it continues to surprise its listeners with innovative new compositions that highlight the art of taiko drumming. Every year, the group's Rhythm Spirit concert showcases some of those new works. Rhythm Spirit 2005 takes place April 23-24 at Campbell's Heritage Theatre.

San Jose Taiko was only the third-ever taiko-drumming group to form in North America, and as one might expect of such a groundbreaking venture, the company remains inventive, from its nontraditional sound, which draws on influences of music from around the world, to the company's unique structure, which is much like a collective. San Jose Taiko members participate in all facets of the company's operation, including composition. Since the company's repertoire is always open to works created by its members, audiences often have the opportunity to hear something new and different.

Rhythm Spirit 2005 will feature new original compositions by performing members Trish Wong, Franco Imperial and company directors Roy and PJ Hirabayashi.

Rhythm Spirit 2005 takes place April 23, 8 p.m. and April 24, 3 p.m. at the Heritage Theatre, 1 W. Campbell Ave, Campbell. Tickets are $20-25. 408.293.9344 or www.taiko.org.
