AAUW TEA: The AAUW Committee on Homeless Women and Children raked in an estimated $6,347 at its annual benefit tea earlier this month. Proceeds raised go to the Georgia Travis Drop-In Center and the San Jose Family Shelter, plus emergency needs of women and children.
Charlotte Pizzo, director of women and children's services at the center, is in urgent need of both a teacher for children up to age 5, as well as a coordinator for activities. Both jobs are 20-30 hours a week.
Sharon Kelkenberg, Melva Vollerson and Ermalyn Benkert were co-chairwomen of the event. Patty Weber is the committee chairwoman. Pat Khan's daughter, Haseena, had the winning raffle ticket—the prize a tanzanite/diamond pendant, valued at $650. Some years back Pat held the winning ticket, so winning seems to be a family affair.
Members of Saratoga High's Scholarship Federation served as waiters, introduced themselves, and told what field they intended to pursue. Medicine was mentioned most often, with law, dentistry and biosciences close behind.
Jerry Ashford entertained, singing to his guitar accompaniment. Ashford plays the first Wednesday of each month at Sam's Bar-B-Que on Bascom Avenue.
FROM THE VATICAN: With the Pope's death and the election of a new Pope, news from the Vatican is at the forefront of people's consciousness and one of the people reporting that news is Delia Gallagher, Vatican analyst for CNN. She's the daughter of Deidre and Charlie Gallagher.
Delia is editor of Inside the Vatican, a monthly magazine that is published in several languages. She is a graduate of University of San Francisco and Oxford, where she earned a doctorate in philosophy. In the Vatican press office she caught the eye of Connie Chung and CNN offered her a contract.
Meanwhile, back in Saratoga, her mother owns Gallagher Learning Center in Quito Village, a tutoring company with 10 teachers and 350 students at any given time. Owner Deidre was a teacher in Ireland and met Bing Crosby while she was still a student—she was seated next to him at an Irish Embassy dinner, given at the death of John Kennedy.
Crosby wanted someone to teach his children Spanish and eventually lured Deidre to California to do just that. She taught the Crosby children for four years and met her husband at that time through Crosby neighbors. The Gallaghers have four boys, one girl. Delia is their oldest.
PAGE TURNER: Here's one devoted reader of Images of Los Gatos, the photo book compiled by Los Gatos Library Director Peggy Conaway. Seems that his daughter gave 93-year-old Jack Human a copy of the book recently. Human lived in Los Gatos for 50 years, and became so fascinated with the local photographic history he just couldn't put it down.
He stayed up all night reading the 128 pages of captioned historic photos. Now there's a dedicated reader.
HISTORY CLUB: The venerable Los Gatos History Club mailed 10 cartons containing 100 pounds of snacks and 30 pounds of toiletries to U.S. Marine Corps troops in Iraq. The cartons were sent to Lt. Col. Willy Buhl to share with his troops. Buhl grew up here and was well known to many of the History Club members.
He is a former student of Carol Burt's, for instance, who spearheaded the drive. The Chiala family of Los Gatos Meats donated wrapped snacks of beef jerky and the Golden Hair Pin Salon in San Jose donated combs and lotions to the cause. Buhl has since been released by the Marines and is living in San Diego with wife, Machela.
MEET THE GUV: Fourth graders from Yavneh Day School got a thrill—as did the adults accompanying them—when the Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger came out of his office to say hello and talk to them a bit about San Jose.
The youngsters were on a field trip to the state Capitol, organized by one of the mothers, Kari Wolff. Her son, Drew Goldstein, is a member of the class. Wolff may be a recognizable name: Drew's granddaddy is Lew Wolff, one of the owners of the Oakland A's. Classroom teachers who led the group are Renee Fine and Shirley Goldstein.
Also touring the capitol with the class was Shari Boxer Baker, whose son is Jack Malish. The governor's appearance hadn't been on the itinerary—it was a total surprise.
SPORTS SHOP: Newest sports shop in town is Sportissimo, in the King's Court Shopping Center. Native Los Gatan Melissa Preston is the manager and the owners are Gaby and Sergio Pinto, originally from Argentina, where "sportissimo" means someone so enthused about sports that it's practically an addiction.
CHOCOLATE: Rivers of Chocolate will flow May 1, 1-5 p.m., at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga. Tickets are $75 in advance, $90 at the door. Cocoa Bon Fine Chocolates and Testerossa Winery are local purveyors whose wares will be on hand. Social Advocates for Youth and EHC LifeBuilders are the sponsors. Tickets at 408.956.8034, ext. 112.
