Car accident on Shannon Road claims life of Los Gatos student
By Grant Shellen
A Los Gatos High School student died this weekend as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident in Los Gatos.

According to a police report, a male juvenile crashed his car on Shannon Road east of Santa Rosa Drive shortly before 5:15 p.m. on April 23. No other vehicles were involved.

He was critically injured and transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he died the next day.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office identified the boy as 16-year-old Charles Byrd.

Los Gatos High School Principal Trudy McCulloch said Byrd, better known as "Bryce," was involved in many different activities and organizations--student government, the school site council, junior varsity volleyball and more. She said approximately 60 students visited his hospital room the evening of April 24.

"He was just a marvelous young man," McCulloch said. "He was the kind of kid who walked into a room and smiled and just lit up the whole room. I mean that sincerely."

She said grief counselors were made available in the school's dance room April 25 and would also be there the next day. Many students had written memorial letters for their classmate on large pieces of paper, and about 150 gathered the morning after his death to walk to the scene of the accident. Police closed the street for the makeshift memorial.

Anyone with additional information about the accident is asked to contact traffic officer Kevin Elliott at 408.354.8600.
