It didn't count in the league standings, but it was no less of an impressive victory when the Los Gatos boys volleyball team swept to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 win over Valley Christian in a non-league match last Tuesday night.
The Wildcats, leaders in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with an 8-0 record, challenged Valley Christian of the powerful West Catholic Athletic League and cruised to the win.
Frank Fritsch was the kill leader for the Wildcats with eight, followed by Brian Register with seven, Cody Stewart with five and Sam Moisenco with four.
Chris Renfer, Dan Langholff and Dan Kent were passing and digging leaders and Register, Moisenco, Stewart, Fritsch and Kris Haushalter were leaders at the net. Setter Eric Rowell finished the night with 26 assists.
The Cats, now 17-2 for the year, host Mountain View on April 26, 7 p.m., before heading to Homestead on April 28 for a 7 p.m. match that should determine the league championship.
The Wildcats will also host the fourth annual Los Gatos Varsity Invitational tournament on April 30 at the Leavey Center at Santa Clara University. The tourney will feature the top teams in the Central Coast Section.
The fourth Los Gatos Junior Varsity Invitational Tournament was played last Saturday at West Valley College, and the host Wildcats placed third for the second year in a row.
The young Cats beat Crystal Springs 25-21, 25-19, St. Ignatius 25-21, 25-13 and St. Francis 26-24, 19-25, 15-9 before losing 25-15, 25-19 to Granite Bay of Roseville in the semifinals.
Kevin Rutledge had 23 kills and seven service aces in the tourney to lead the Cats. Alex Scott added 18 kills and five aces, Justin Whiteley had 12 kills and Bryce Bryd drilled nine kills. Ryan Magnin had three solo blocks. Aleksey Pavlov, Taylor Stephens and Jake Haueter also contributed.
The Wildcats are now 13-3 for the year and, like the varsity, 8-0 in league play.
