Two No. 1's join forces to host 31st annual Cat's Hill Criterium
By Dick Sparrer
Basic arithmetic may tell us otherwise, but sometimes one plus one doesn't add up to two—at least in the case of the annual Cat's Hill Classic bicycle race through the streets of Los Gatos.

The No. 1 cycling club in the nation—the Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club—and the No. 1 winery—Testarossa Vineyards—have joined forces to present the 31st running of the Cat's Hill Criterium.

More than 700 amateur and professional cyclists will cruise the back streets of downtown Los Gatos on May 7 w

hen racing gets under way at the corner of Tait and Nicholson avenues in the Almond Grove District.

The race is named for the rugged 23 percent Cat's Hill climb on Nicholson and also features six rugged 90-degree turns on the race course. The impressive course design has attracted many top riders through the years, including Greg LeMond (winner in 1978), Derek Bouchard-Hall, Karen Brems, Suzy Pride, Nicole Freedman, Eric Heiden, Davis Phinney, Bob Roll, Ted Huang, Eric Wohlberg, Trent Klasna, Antonio Cruz and Dylan Casey.

Another impressive field is expected this year when cyclists will take off with the first starting gun at 10 a.m. and ride all day in races that range from three to 40 laps, depending upon age and ability levels.

The Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club has played host to the event each year since its inception in 1974. The club was recently honored with an award as the No. 1 cycling club in the United States.

Testarossa Vineyards, Restaurant Wine Magazine's 2004 Winery of the Year, has joined the sponsorship list this year and will allow spectators with a wine tasting opportunity and transportation to and from the race course. Cycling fans can park in the Testarossa parking lot, and the winery will offer a free shuttle that will run every 20 minutes to the event. Race spectators will be offered coupons for a free wine-tasting the day of the race.
