Police make arrest in connection with a series of local burglaries
By Grant Shellen
Police announced last week that a man believed to be responsible for a great deal of local theft was arrested early last month.

Officers with the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department arrested 25-year-old Matthew Ryan Hahn at his San Benito Avenue home April 8. Sgt. Mike Barbieri said police discovered in March that he had been selling stolen property on eBay.

A search of both his home and public storage unit turned up more than 150 items believed to be stolen primarily from automobiles and residences.

"There's a lot of stuff that's worth some money," Barbieri said.

Among the items found were power tools, car stereos, cameras, laptop computers, DVD players, sunglasses and even a generator. Barbieri said it is possible that some of the items were from construction sites. He said there was no indication yet that any of them were stolen from businesses, but that has not been ruled out.

Since such a large number of items was found, Barbieri said he expects to see a reduction in theft locally.

"I think this guy's hurt us for a while," he said.

Hahn is being held without bail. He is scheduled to enter a plea in Santa Clara County Superior Court May 18.

Police are asking anyone in the area, not just in Los Gatos and Monte Sereno, who have had items stolen from them to report the theft at 408.354.8600 if they have not already done so. Anyone with additional information about the case is asked to call the detective bureau at 408.354.6825.
